VOLLEYBALL (Continued from page 1) petition. The Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association includes 1.U., Ball State, Earlham, Indiana Tech and other Colleges and Universities in the Midwest. Of course YMCA’s and similar organizations all over the country provide competition after school years. One of the many good features of volleyball is that it can be played for many years, as an active competitive sport.

The rules of volleyball are simple. There are six players on a team, three in the front row and three in back. Each must remain in their relative positions until the ball is served, and can then shift anywhere. However rear row men can not move to the front row for blocking or spiking. One team puts the ball in play by serving from behind the back line of their court. The receiving team has three hits to return the ball, and play continues until one team fails to return the ball in three hits, or less. A player can

The other team rotates its players one position clockwise, and begins serving. A game is fifteen points, with at least a two point difference. The only controversial rule concerns ball handling. The rule book states “The ball must be clearly hit. When the ball visibly comes to rest at contact, the player shall have committed an er-

ror.” Throwing, lifting, scooping, or carrying the ball are obviously not allowed. In games played without a referee, it is easier to see others faults than ones own. Most god teams take advantage of all of their 3 hits. The first pass is to a “set-up” man in the front row. He then makes a “set” close to the net so the “spiker” can drive the ball over the net into the other court This “spike” is one of the exciting plays of volleyball, with the ball traveling at measured speeds close to 100 mph. The constant shift from offense to defense, the contrast of hard spikes and soft passes, plus the need for teamwork makes volleyball an interesting, challenging and exciting game. At our exhibition many of the most skilled players in Marion County will appear. Some of

them will be preparing for play in the National Tourney in Detroit early in May. After the exhibition, a period of open play will be held so that anyone interested can participate. Volleyball for both boys and girls will be part of the summer park recreation program. In addition, at least one evening a week will be set for adult volleyball on an open participation basis.
