Union Carbide (Continued from page 1) for the Saturn booster rocket designed for putting men on the moon. Also included in the new Materials Systems Division is the Corporation’s Flame-Plating Service, which was developed by the Linde Division in Speedway, Indiana. The main sales, production, engineering, and development facilities as well as the general management headquarters for Flame-Plating is located in Speed-
way and has been for the past 15 years. Flame-Plating is a unique method of applying extremely hard surface coatings of metal or ceramic to machine parts or products for combatting problems of abrasion and wear. Big users include the aircraft and aerospace fields, textile, petrochemical, business machine, and hydraulic industries. Other business to be included
in the new Division are Karbate products, such as corrosion-resis-tant heat exchangers, which are made of graphite by the Carbon Products Division; and special vehicle components, such as heat shields for intercontinental missiles, which have here-to-fore been handled by the Developmental Division of the corporation. In making the announcement, Mr. Mason pointed out that Union Carbide has numerous products used in high-performance services where unusual erosive and corrosive forces are at work or where physical strength must be maintained at extreme temperatures. He stated as examples, the oxidation-resistant materials that the corporation produces for jet engine combustion chambers and the' new Thornel graphite yarn being used for reinforcing plastic materials in the development of structural components for space vehicles.

“Establishment of the new division,” Mason said, “will make it posisble to coinbine Union Carbide’s product and process capabilities in this high-performance materials field, so that systems of materials can be produced for customers.” Instead of only making unfinished parts or other forms of starting materials, the corporation may produce finished parts, sub-assemblies, or complete
assemblies, according to the needs of the customer. Typical products for the new division might vary from corrosion-resistant centrifugal pumps to erosion shields for helicopter blades. Mr. Abrams joined Union Carbide in 1941 at the Tonawanda plant of the Linde Division of the corporation. During his career with Union Carbide, he has been identified with various areas of the corporation business, including Silicones, Olefins and Building Materials. From 1964 until his present appointment, he was president of Food Products Division. He is an alumnus of the University of Minnesota, where he received the degree of B.S. in 1989 and M.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1941. Mr. Ford became associated with Union Carbide in 1937 as a salesman with the Cleveland office of what is now the Carbon
