YOUTH EMPLOYMENT “We’re rating our 1966 Youth Opportunity Campaign a success but already trying to devise ways of finding even more jobs for students and graduates next summer,” Paul Roales, Manager of the Indians State Employment Service Youth Opportunity Center, said today. He said that from May through August, his office placed young job seekers (all under 22 years of age) in 1,411 jobs in this area. Roales had praise for local employers whose employment of young workers this year helped bring success to the Youth Opportunity Campaign sponsored nationally by the President and Vice President and statewide by the Indiana State Employment Service. Actually, he added, many employers found themselves benefiting from the campaign. During vacation months in their plants

and offices they were able to fill their staff vacancies and maintain production. Of the placements of workers under 22 years of age this summer, more than 99% were in nonagricultural employment. Roales said that young people of college age fared better in securing fulltime jobs than did those of high school age. However, the younger groups were used for spot and temporary jobs, when possible. These youngsters, too, were also in demand for agricultural. Roales said even though employer response was good, it was nat sufficient for the applicant load. In spite of the tight labor market and the placements made through the specially operated Youth Employment Service, a substantial number of young people here who wanted and needed summer employment did not find it Currently the Youth Opportunity Center is handling placements of graduates, part time students and school dropouts.

HERE'S HOW YOUR NEWSPAPER CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE Your newspaper can save your life some night, says the Hoosier Motor Club. \ “To be safe when walking after dark, you must be seen,” according to James W. Parks, secretarymanager. “People wearing dark clothing are very difficult to see at night “Carrying a newspaper is like having a safety flag, because headlight beams reflect off the white paper and alert oncoming drivers. Pedestrians not wearing or carrying something white at night aren’t visible nearly as far or as soon to motorists. “The fatal accident rate is three times higher at night” the AAA official said, “and night walking is far more dangerous than night driving. Highways deaths average seven at night for every two during the day in urban areas, and 13 at night for every five in the day in rural areas. “During winter, pedestrian deaths rise sharply, especially in
urban areas, with December and January being the deadliest months for the man afoot “The hours from 4 to 9 pun. are the most dangerous of all because of driver fatigue, traffic congestion and low visibility. AAA advises you to wear or carry something white at night”
