MARCH OF TIMES GIRL ON SPECIAL When a little girl’s favorite toys suddenly come to life and start to perform, you can be sure that the wonderful world of magic has taken over and it’s time for “Fun and Crames” in color on Sunday, January 8 at 8:30 PM. on Channel 4, WTTV. Donna Dill, the 1967 March of nimea campaign child, is transported into the special realm of fantasy for an afternoon of fun. Here, a puppet theatre becomes a stage, and old toys are transformed into a troupe of stars who sing and dance and entertain . . . all to make a little girl laugh. Who are Donna’s favorite friends? Phyllis Diller, Glenn Ford, Jack Gilford, Lome Greene, Eartha Kitt, Rowan and Martin, Dick Van Dyke, and Jane Wyatt Four puppets-come-to-life are on hand with their own special brand of sparkle to enliven the show throughout. Fred Engle is producer, Bill Colleran directs and Joseph Pupkin is associate producer. The lyrics, music, and special material for “Fun and Games” were written by Jay Thompson for the March of Dimes campaign.

Speedway Lions Club 27th Anniversary The Speedway Lions Club will celebrate its 27th Anniversary January 11, starting at 7:00 pm. at the Holiday Inn West 4665 West 16th Street. Past International Director A. Garland Hardy of Muncie, Indiana will be the speaker for the evening. Lion Hartfy has been active in Lions Club work since 1948. He held the office of District Governor of Tndiqria District 25A in 1954-55, and was elected to the high office of Director of The International Association of Lions Clubs at the International Convention in New York City in 1959. He served in this capacity for 2 years. While serving on the International Board he was Chairman of the Lions International Blind Work Committee and was one of the original members of the committee who set up the
Lions Youth Exchange Program. He received the International President’s Award each year that he was on the board. Lion served as Assistant to the Dean of the Graduate School of Ball State University and since 1961 has been Director of Space Studies and Utilization. Lion Hardy is also active in church work and is currently serving on the Board of Direc tors of the Westminister Foundation on the Ball State campus for Presbyterian Students. He also serves on the Board of the Delaware County Council of Boy Scouts and has served as President of this Council For his services to Scouting he has been awarded the Scounters Key and the Silver Beaver award.
LaLECHE LEAGUE The January meeting of the Speedway LaLeche League will be Tuesday, January 17th at 8:00 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Patricia Baxter at 615 “C” N. Tibbs Ave., Indianapolis. Susan Hajar Susan Najar of 2025 Fisher Street in Speedway was presented with the first place award at the Speedway Lions Club’s regular meeting on the evening of December 28, 1966 She received a beautifully inscribed and framed certificate from Lions International and a $50.00 check from the Speedway Lions Club. Susan is a fourteen year old eighth grade student at Speedway Junior High School. She may well be the youngest of any of Lions International’s local contest winners. Her essay has now been forwarded to the District 25-F contest which will include all of Marion County as well as the southeastern quarter of Indiana. The second prize of $30.00 was awarded to Richard Wacker of 5874 Speedway Drive. He is a freshman at Indiana University. Third prize of $20.00 was, given to Charles Eads. Charles lives at 6806 Walton and is a first year student at Purdue University’s Indianapolis Regional Campus. The Speedway _ Lions , Club wishes to thank all of the contestants for the time and effort that they put into their entries in this contest. We believe that they, whether successful or not, will have profited from it and that the reality of a truly peaceful world will be nearer for their labors. We wish every success to Susan in the successive levels of the contest yet to come.

Mr. Cledith Stephens, 5064 Ford Street, Speedway Indiana « a member of the Speedway Fire Department since June 1, 1943 and Fire Chief since September 1, 1946 retired on December 31st, 1966. .When Mr. Stephens joined the Department he was the only paid fireman. On September 1, 1943 Mr. Louis Trosky was hired as the second paid fireman. These two men served on a 24 hour basis. In 1945 Mr. Cleo Flinn was appointed Fire Chief. In 1946 Mr. Stephens was appointed Fire Chief. In 1951 the Town purchase ed a new Maxim Track, a 750 Gallon per minute pumper, fully equipped to fight all types of fires. In 1953 two additional firemen were hired bringing the regular department to 4 men. In 1955 one additional fireman hired bringing the department up to 5 men. In 1958 two additional fireman hired bringing the der partment up to 7 men. In 1966 the Town purchased another new Maxim Fire Track, a 1,000 gallon per minute pumper, fully equipped to fight all types of fires. At this time the Town retired the old Diamond “T” Fire track. In 1962 the Town hired two additional fireman bringing the department up to 9 men. On November 8, 1962 the Fire Department moved into their new and, present headquarters at 1430 North Lyndhurst Drive. On January 1, 1965 two additional firemen hired bringing to 11 men in the department AU of above additions were made during the time Mr. Stephens was a member and Fire Cries.
Mr. Stephens has one daugter, Mrs. Edward Hawkins who lives at 6126 Hollister Drive and he has four grandchildren. Mr. Stephens has no immediate plans for his retirement He was presented a plaque on December 13th by Mr. Freeman D. Ketron, President of the Town Board of Trustees for his services to the Town of Speedway. Mr. Clifton O. Francis, 5005 West 22nd Street Speedway has been appointed Fire Chief effective January 1, 1967.

Speedway Burning Of The Greens The whole community is invited to observe the burning of over 4,000 trees which are being brought to the lot just west of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. ®he Speedway Fire Department will assist at the burning. TWELFTH-NIGHT BURNING OF THE GREENS is an annual event at St Andrew’s and will take place Friday, January 6th at about 8:15 PM. It may be viewed from the Shopping Center parking lot, or from the church grounds. The community is also invited to the play, “THE WOUNDED”, which will be presented in the Fellowship Hall of the church prior to the tree burning. The play begins at 7:00, presented by the Seminary Players of tire Christian Theological Seminary. There will be a free-will ottering for the play.

The Town Board Reports By Bay L. Orth, aatkTteep. The Board of Trustees for the Civil Town of Speedway held their final meeting for the year of 1966 on Tuesday evening December 27, 1966 in the Town Hall auditorium. Mr. Fredrick Allan Zominger was hired as a new fireman effective January 1, 1967 to fill a vacancy created due to the retirement of Fire Chief Cledith Stephens on December 31, 1966. Mr. Melvin Lucas was advanced to a Lieutenant in the Fire Department effective January 1, 1967 on recommendation of itr. C. O. Francis, newly appointed Fire Chief. The Board approved the purchase of a new Water Pump to be used by the Sanitation Department and the Street Department at a cost of approximately $1,361.71.
The Board approved the purchase of a new 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 for the newly appointed investigator for the Police Department. Mr. Billy N. Crafton was appointed as investigator effective January 1, 1967. Prosposed plans for the construction of a Service Station by the Humble Oil Company at the Northwest comer of Georgetown Road and US. No. 136 were presented to the Board at this meeting.
Preliminary plans for the construction of an apartment complex on High School Road between 1-74 and 1-465 North of Howard Johnson’s Motel were presented for the Board to review. Bev. Hodapp On Sunday the Bth of January the preacher at both services will be The Rev. Leroy Hodapp. Mr. Hodapp is the Superintendent of the Bloomington District of the Methodist Church. In the afternoon Mr. Hodapp will be the speaker at a workshop for Evangelism to be held at the Speedway Methodist Church in connection with the Lebanon Methodist District Conference. Mr. Hodapp is married with two daughters, Lynn and Nancy Ellen. He received his education at Evansville College and subsequently studied at the Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, New Jersey. In 1961 the Evansville College granted to Mr. Hodapp the degree of Doctor of Divinity. Mr. Hodapp began his ministry at Asbury Methodist Church Evansville, Indiana in 1943. Thereafter followed ministries in Brooklyn, N.Y, Orleans, Ind, and Indianapolis. From 1861 to 1967 Mr. Hodapp was the Senior Minister -of the First Methodist Churdi, Bloomington, Ind.
