FORSYTH EXHIBIT Marian College in observance of the Indiana Sesquicentennial will present an exhibit of the works of Indiana Artist William J. Forsyth from November 15 to November 23 in the college’s Music Building, 3040 Cold Spring Bead. It win be the first major showing of Forsyth’s work since the late 1930’5. The Show wiH be open to the public daily from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 pun. History Of The Speedway Five Department The Speedway Volunteer Fire Department was started some time in 1916 when Lem Trotter purchased a Firehose Cart The Cart was stored at the Prest-O-Lite garage. This Cart was moved about manually by members of the volunteer fire department. The Town of Speedway was incorporated in 1926, with an office in the 1500 block of North Main Street In 1928, Prest-O-Lite converted an old Reo truck into the town’s first fire truck. The fire truck was housed at the Prest-O-Lite garage and was run by their employees along with the assistance of the volunteer firemen. At this time Art Beeler was Fire Chief and N. V. Jehnings was assistant Fire Chief of the Speedway Volunteer Fire Department. In 1935, The Town of Speedway purchased a new Diamond T Fire Truck, a 500 gallon per min-

At this time the town hired two firemen, Cledith Stephens and Louis Trosky. One man releaved the other, working 24 hours on duty and 24 hours off duty. This marked the beginning of the regular Speedway Fire Department. In 1945, Cleo Flinn was appointed Fire Chief. In 1960, the town purchased a new Maximm Fire Truck, a 1,000 gallon per minute pumper, fully equiped to fight all types of fires. Also, at this time the town retired the Diamond T Fire Truck, which was later sold to the Raceway Park Race Track in Clermont, Indiana. October 1, 1963, the town hired two additional firemen, bringing the regular department up to 9 men. November 8, 1962, the Speedway Fire Department moved into their new headquarters at 1430 North Lyndhurst Drive.
