HISTORY OF SPEEDWAY
Speedway, as a town, came into being in a rather peculiar manner. Many years ago (about 1905 or 1906) Mr. Carl Fisher, with a business associate, undertook a trip to a neighboring city by way of automobile. The automobile developed so much truoble that it took three days to make the trip. On returning to Indianapolis, Mr. Fisher contacted Mr. James A. Allison, who was also interested in the new fangled machine called an automobile. These men realized that the automobile would some day be the most important piece of machinery in the country. They also realized that it would take years and years of hard work and research to build an automobile that would withstand the punishment of every day use. They quickly decided to build a testing and proving ground and sent Mr. Lem H. Trotter out to find a suitable location. This Mr. Lem Trotter was still a resident of Speedway until his death a few months ago and lived at 1531 Allison Street. He was 97 years old and was still active in the realty business. A very amusing story demonstrates his character and his desire to live on indefinitely. He owned a very desirable piece of property and was approached by a large corporation about the property. They wanted to erect a business building and a hotel, but Mr. Trotter would not sell, he would only lease the ground for 99 years. The representative said, “well, what happens, we erect a fine building and after 99 years tom- lease runs out”. Trotter quickly replied, “well
come back and I’ll negotiate a new one”. And another thing, years ago he actually designed a round hotel with every room on the outside and all the services in the center. These plans 'are still in his office. However, you may have noticed recently, they used a similar design in building the new addition to the Community Hospital. So you see Mr. Fisher had selected a very competent person to look for the new location of his proving ground. After careful study of surrounding areas, the site of the present 500 mile race track was selected. The building of the track was a big and expensive undertaking so Mr. Fisher and Mr. Allison persuaded other men to invest money in the project, namely a Mr. Arthur Newby and Mr. Frank H. Wheeler. The Speedway School Board has honored four men by naming the four elementary schols after them. The testing and proving grounds grew and prospered and is now the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The same Mr. Fisher and Mr. Allison owned and operated the Prest-O- Lite Company located in Indianapolis. They manufactured gas and tanks which were used for lighting purposes on automobiles. dents caused by the gas exploding, the city of Indianapolis ordered the plant to move out of town. The first plant was at 28th and Pennsylvania Streets and was purchased from a Mr. Sweet. It blew up. The second plant was on East Street, just north of South Street and it blew up. The third plant was on South Street, just west of East Street and it also blew up. Because they were already interested in the Speedway area, they purchased more ground and built a new plant at 16th and Main. It was known as a Daylight plant because of the large number of windows. The only transportation available at that time was an interurban which ran between Indianapolis and Crawfordsville, Indiana. So as the plant grew special interurban cars were run to Speedway morning and evening just to haul the employees to work and back home again. Mr. Allison saw the need of homes for the factory workers where they would be closer to their work so he formed the Speedway Realty Company, purchased more land, and with the help of Mr. Trotter plotted Speedway City Addition in 1913. This was bounded by Main Street, Tenth Street, Winton and West 16th Street. People began to buy lots and build houses. Speedway, as a community, had made its first start. There are now 6 square miles or 3,840 acres within the boundary lines. Its present

Other industries began to move in, each one bringing more people. This brought the need for some type of community control In 1926, just 40 years ago, people voted to incorporate and an election was held. The five hundred and seven (507) people who lived here elected the first town officials consisting of three town trustees and one clerk-treasurer. Speedway is a town, it became a town because the residents chose to have their own form of government, rather than be a part of Indianapolis. The function of a town government is set by the Legislature, and it consists of a Board of Trustees and a Town Clerk-Treasurer. All boards and department heads are approved by the Board of Trustees, such as the School Board and Park Board. The government in Speedway is strictly non-political. Elections are held every four years at which time Town Trustees and Town Clerk-Treasurer are selected. Prior to the election held every four years there is a convention the candidates are elected as follows and every person over 21 years of age who lives in Speedway is invited to attend. SPEEDWAY STUDENT THEATRE PRESENTS One of the unlikeliest but most deliriously daffy mix-ups in modern comedy will soon be taking over the stage of the Speedway High School Auditorium, as an American GI is mistaken for a British clergyman and both get confused with an escaped prisoner in the farce-comedy called “See How They Rim.” The play opens on the Speedway stage Thursday, October 20, at 4:00, and returns Saturday night, October 22, at 8:00 p.m. Set in the English vicarage of the Reverend Lionel Toop, “See How They Run” is said to be one of the freshest and funniest treatments of the mistaken-identity farce theme, as the vicar, a bishop, a visiting clergyman, an armed intruder, and an Air Force corporal, all in clerical garb, get hopelessly scrambled. An old maid who has been less than prudent on her first bout with the bottle, a younger maid who’s seen too many movies, and a police sergeant add to the ingeniously involved merriment in the aptly-named “See How They Run.”
Donna Tyler will be seen as the vicar’s sprightly wife whose perfectly innocent date with the GI, with whom she had once appeared on the Amercian stage, is saucily scrambled into the frothy comedy situations in the play. Doug Rosebrock will be seen as the increasingly embarrassed GI, and Jane Keating the spinster who falls off the water wagon. Ronnie Stewart, Kurt Young, and Guy Roush play bona-fide clergymen caught in a vicarage overflowing wi|tih imposters posing as men of the cloth. One of the biggest comedy hits to have reached the London theatre in recent years, having chalked up a run of ovet/a year there, “See How They Run” is being performed here ahead of its New York Showing. “See How They Run” will be directed by Mr. Andrew Wagner, Associate Director, and tickets will be bought from Mr. Don Johnson, who is creating the set. Advance sale of tickets will start October 10, and mail-orders should be sent to Mr. Don Johnson, Speedway High School. “See How They Run” should be one of the biggest hits to be presented on the Speedway stage.
