Join Union Carbide Corp. Electronics Division Dr. W. J. Alford and Dr. G. A. Keig have joined Union Carbide Corporation's Electronics Division with the Crystal Products R and D Laboratory at Indianapolis. Union Carbide’s Crystal Products Department is the major producer of industrial crystals including ruby and sapphire as well as synthetic gems such as Linde star sapphire and emerald. Dr. Alford is responsible for development and growth of electro-optic crystals used in the rapidly growing quantum electronics area. A native of Kenly, North Carolina, he received his BJS., M.S., and Ph.D. in Ceramis from Rutgers University, served as a research officer at Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, Hanscom Field, Mass., and has co-authored four papers on various aspects of crystal growth and evaluation. Dr. Keig is responsible for single crystal ruby and sapphire research, including a government contract for high perfection ruby. Ruby is the most important laser material and has found application in rangefinding, welding, and medical fields. Dr. Keig was born in the British Isles (Douglas, Isle of Man), received his B. Sc. (Honours) from Liverpool University, England, and his Sc. D. in Ceramics from MIT. He is the author of two papers on nuclear ceramics. Both men are members of the American Ceramic Society.

Indianapolis Hiking Club The Indianapolis Hiking Club will hike in the Mill Creek area southwest of Danville on Sunday, September 11.
