HARNESS RACING AT FAIR State Fair officials are tagging Labor Day as the “greatest single -day in Indiana Harness Racing history” and well they may as it appears that the largest total purses ever offered in the Hoosier state and the greatest horses in the land will combine for a record-breaking afternoon. Moneywise, there will be over $183,000 offered for the four top State events on Sept. 5. According to Octave Blake no other harness racing program has ever offered so much money on one day. And, he should know, because he has been president of the Grand Circuit for 20 years

and seen almost all of the races on the 22-member tour. Dr. Charles L. Armington, the harness race director for the fair, says that the estimated purses will go like this: Fox Stake for 2 year old pacers—ss9,ooo; the Horseman Stake for 2 year old trotters Futurity for 3 year old trotters—s39,ooo; the Horseman Futurity for 3 year old pacers—s36,ooo. As farr as the performers them-selves—-the trotters and pacers—there is speed galore. Romulus Hanover is blazing his way around the East and should be favored in the Fox. Hickory Blaze is burning up the 2 year old trotting ranks heading this way. Among the sophomores, Bonus Boy and Polaris are trotting up a storm while the great Romeo Hanover is just waiting for a crack at Bret Hanover’s Indianapolis 1:55 mark. The question there is—just how fast can he go?
