Telephone Repair Calls Indiana Bell has inaugurated expert handling of telephone repair calls around the clock by routing nighttime calls to a new “service control center” in Indianapolis. T. C. Walker, division manager, said operations of the center, which started last fall, have been steadily broadened most recently to handle nighttime repair calls from telephone users in any of the company’s 131 exchanges. “This means that a specially trained telephone man or woman will answer all repair calls, day or night, and will have the technical knowledge to determine

how best to correct a trouble condition,” he said. Depending on circumstances, nighttime repair calls may be referred to a craftsman on duty in a telephon building may be teletyped to a service center in the area involved for handling early the next day, or may result in a repairman being called out for emergency night work. During daytime and evening hours, repair calls are answered at one of Indiana Bell’s 40 service centers around the state. The nighttime calls previously were answered by operators who then relayed information to the company”s plant department. Now, repair calls automatically are relayed to the Indianapolis center when local service centers
are closed. Telephone users will dial the usual local repair number, day or night. “The new procedure recently paid off when men in the service control center were able to pinpoint a major cable break in suburban Indianapolis from only three nighttime repair calls,” Walker said. “The cable was spliced back together during the night and was ready for service when people started using their phones the next morning.” The more than two dozen people assigned to the new center also coordinate inter-city and inter-company installations of communications equipment and direct restoration efforts when there are abnormal service disruptions.
