Also, at this meeting, Mr. Kenneth Jones will explain the opportunities offered in the instrumental program and the school bands. Speedway golf team won the Mid - State Conference Golf Tourney played last week. Earlier they ulaced sth among the 12 schools participating in the Marion County golf meet, and won a dual contest with Beech Grove, final scores: Speedway Beech Grove 2%. Southport’s tennis team scored 5, Speedway 0, in a meet played at Speedway during the past week. Speedway’s varsity basketball team outscored Plainfield 3-0 in the team’s only game last week. In track Speedway placed 3rd in the Ben Davis Relays, and scored four points in the sectional meet at Washington High School. In a dual track meet Speedway freshmen scored 60, Greenwood 58.
Library Notes The Senior High School Library is open four late afternoons each week for the convenience of students and adults of Speedway. Hours are from 4:00 to 6:30 Monday through Thursday. MEMORIAL SERVICES The “500” Festival Memorial Service, in remembrance of the dead in all U. S. wars, will be held Memorial Sunday, May 29, on the south steps of the Indiana World War Memorial, facing University Park. The program is designed to perpetuate, with reverence, dignity and color, the memory of men and women who made the supreme sacrifice in defense of the American way of life. The public is invited to assemble for a band concert provided by the Emmerich Manual High School Symphonic Band, under direction of Mr. William D. Kley la, starting at 2:30 p.m. Distinguished participants will i n c 1 u d e Governor Roger D. Branigin, Mayor John J. Barton and U. S. Armed Forces representatives. Officers of the Gold Star Mothers, Spanish - American War veterans, The American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars will join the Governor and Mayor in placing memorial wreaths at the base of the statue “Pro Patria” on the Memorial steps. Music also will be provided by The Shortridge High School A Cappella Choir under the direction of Mr. Thomas O. Preble. Clergymen of five faiths will take part: The Reverend Charles S. Smith, Pastor of the Coppin C h a p e 1 African Methodist Church; The Reverend Father Anthony McLoughlin, Pastor, Assumption Catholic Church; The Reverend Father Joseph M. Shaheen, St. George Syrian Antiochian Orthodox Church; The Reverend Howard W. Stone, Pastor, Irvington Presbyterian Church; and Rabbi Nandor Fruchter, Congregation B’nai Torah. The Posting of Colors by a U. S. Army Color Guard from Fort Benjamin Harrison will formally open the service at 3:00 p.m. The Rifle Salute by a U. S. Marine Corps firing squad and “Taps” will conclude it a half-hour later. Army National Guard aircraft will fly overhead in the formation of a cross as the colors are posted. A guard detail of U. S. Navy men will patrol the memorial steps at the upper level. Fifty bright American flags will match a like number of state flags, one for each of the 50 states, in a colorful “parade of flags” just prior to the opening of the service, providing a backdrop for the U. S. flag, Indiana flag and memorial wreaths to be placed later. Flag bearers will be 100 local Boy Scouts who comprise the
well-known “Governor’s- Honor Guard." Mr. Walter J. Schuchmann of the Finance Center, U. S. Army, Chairman of the Memorial Service Committee, will preside.
PERSONALS A record number of 495 employees with twenty-five or' more years of service with Eli Liily and Company have been invited to a company banquet Tuesday, May 10, at the Indianapolis Athletic Club. This is the twentysecond annual event honoring Tally associates with long service records. May 10 also marks the company’s ninetieth anniversary. Four Speedway residents will be among those honored. diana College-Business Symposium Tuesday, Apil 26, at Indianapolis. Students from nearly all Indiana colleges, universities and regional campuses exchanged ideas on the American free enterprise system with four business executives during the Symposium. The Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce cooperated with the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce of the United States in sponsoring the Symposium. Attending from Indiana Central was Steve Maple, 1815 Ellen Dive, Speedway. Steve is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Maple and is a 1962 graduate of Speedway High School. ARMED FORCES DAY An Armed Forces Day exhibition open to the public will be held at Stout Field Saturday, May 21, from 10 am. to 3 pm., Indiana Adjutant General John S. Anderson announced today.
