Don’t Be A Statistic i Hie figures crowd the sheet of -paper, trim and impressive in their neatly ruled columns. But very remote and impersonal, too. Thai you take a closer look. Figures, yes—but they represent people. What people? People who jet side when they could have stayed well. People who died when they could have remained alive. - _ They got sick, they died—of what? The answer may surprise you—you thought it didn’t happen any more. The answer is: tuberculosis. It does happen—not as much as it once did, but still far too much. More 50,000 new active cases were reported in 1964. Nearly died of the disease. Sometimes it’s present for months even years before it’s detected. Which brings us right back to those rows of figures on the paper. One seems to leap right out at you—a few little words that tell a big story. In 1963, it says, more than two thousand people who’s deaths were listed with TB as a chief or subsidiary cause ‘‘had never been reported as cases of tuberculosis.” How are you going to get rid of a disease when you can’t even find out who has it? But we can find out, if people will cultivate that bump of that tells them what’s needed for their own sake and everybody’s. What’s needed is to get a TB skin test regularly and to find out whether you have that troublesome germ in your body—and if so, what to do about it. Ask your local Christmas Seal organization for the free booklet, ’Tacts about TB and Other Respiratory Diseases” and follow the advice given.

CHILDREN'S VISION Children must rely on adults lor good sight, declares the Indiana Society for the Prevention of Blindness. The parent’s role in insuring £ood vision for a child cannot be stressed enough. A child does not know how well he should see. A youngster may have blurred vision, or see double, or use only nnp eye, and still not complain about his eyesight simply because he doesn’t know better. Some contagious diseases such as smallpox and diptheria can cause visual damage, so the child should be immunized against them before his first birthday. A critical time for visual care is early in the preschool years when eye defects con still be corrected with best results. By the time a child is three or four years old, his vision should have been examined professionally. Defects such as crossed eyes or ambiyopia can lead to permanent loss of vision in the affected eye if not detected and treated by the age of six. Ambiyopia, a condition in which an eye appears perfectly Wealthy yet actually has low or weak vision, may affect as many as one in every 20 American youngsters, according to findings of the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness, Inc. Because amblyopia is difficult to detect, eye examinations in the preschool years are vital. A child’s eyes grow as he grows. He may have normal vision one year and need glasses the next. Regular eye examinations are a guarantee that undected eye problems will not handicap him during studies or sports.

Children do not outgrow crossed eyes. If this condition is not treated, preferably by the age of four, the sight in the crossed eye may fail to develop fully, ■wH the youngster will grow up with no useful vision in the eye. Reading and watching television will not harm young eyes if done correctly. The youngster should read in good light, holding the book about 14 inches from his face. While viewing television, he should sit at least ten feet from the set at about the same level as the screen. The room should be illuminated sufficiently to prevent a sharp contrast between the bright screen and dark surroundings.
