Air Conditioning At World's Fair Hot, harried Hoosiers arriving at the World’s Fair will find it a ‘“cool” one, according to Citizens Gas and Coke Utility, with gas providing 80 per cent of the air conditioning at the huge complex of exhibits. At the fair, gas is cooling 47 pavilions and exhibits, along with the World’s Fair headquarters, Press Center, and Control Room. Largest of all the gas installations at the fair is the Ford Motors pavilion, with a 1,600-ton cooling capacity for its 235-foot rotunda and 500-foot-long, seven-story-high exhibit area. Other pavilions using 1,000 tons or more of gas operated air conditioning include: General Motors, 1,200 tons; Federal pavilion, 1,000 tons; and the Better Living Center, 1,000 tons. In addition to doing the bulk of the “cooling” at the fair, according to the Uutility, gas is also responsible for 90 per cent of the heating and 99 per cent of the fuel used in food preparation there. The Festival of Gas pavilion, one of the highlights of last season, this year is offering visitors a half million dollars of new and exciting attractions. A “Big Top” carousel circles past eight threedimensional exhibits showing the past and present accomplishments of the gas industry and projecting its strides into the future. Marion County residents, long devoted to summer outdoor life, will find on display in the various areas of the Gaslight Patio the

ultimate in convenience and comfort for “open air” living. The gas barbecue unit, newest item in outdoor cooking, is a main feature, as well as the infrared patio heaters. Daily cooking demonstrations of the barbecue unit are given by well-known chefs. Also under the big top is the fair’s largest and most unusual showroom, the Garden of Appliances. Set in a picturesque garden with streams, fountains, and ponds is a display of modern home and other gas equipment Using a circus theme, the area features everything from airconditioners to fireplaces, ranges and dryers. The important role of gas in the world of tomorrow is the idea behind the new three-room House of Energy exhibit. Home dry cleaning, a cylindrical handling gas oven, disposable “made-at-home” plastic dishes, and a round refrigerator-freezer are some of the unique gas appliances of the future. In addition to this year’s innovations at the Festival of Gas, the Theater of Food featuring live and filmed gas cooking; the Festival ’65 which is the fair’s American gourment restaurant; and the Gas Energy Center, the “Biggest Little Exhibit” at the fair, are attracting even more attention this year than last when over two and a half million people visited them.

ENTRANCE CHARGES AT SOME PARKS Federal recreation agency officials recently listed areas where entrance charges will be required this year, and there is only one such area in Indiana —the German Ridge Recreation Area in the Hoosier National Forest. Under the new Land and Water Conservation Fund Act, charges are made only where there is Investment in recreation facilities and where collection of fees is feasible. Proceeds from the charges are channeled into the Land and Water Conservation Fund to provide additional State and Federal outdoor recreation opportunities. The Bureau of Outdoor Recreation of the Department of the Interior administers the Fund. The entrance fees apply to many Federal areas for the first time. However, a number of National Parks and other areas have been charging entrance fees for some years. A new $7 Federal Recreation/ Conservation Sticker available

will star in an afternoon and evening show in the Coliseum, Aug. 28-29, at the 1965 Indiana State Fair. Appearing with Nabors as a special guest star is Lonesome George Gobel. Through the media of television, he became known as the uncomplaining hushand to Alice and the orginator of the expression “I’ll be a dirty bird!” Nabors began his career by doing a mixture of operatic arias and hillbilly monologues at The Horn, a Santa Monica nightclub that allows talented newcomers to perform without a fee. While performing at The Horn, he was persuaded to read for what was intended as a one-time part oh “The Andy Griffith Show,” the part of Gomer Pyle, a naive, easygoing service station attendant. Nabors was such a natural that he was written into the rest of the series. As his popularity grew, he was given his own series, “Gomer Plye, USMC.” George Gobel got his first taste of show business when he sang and played his guitar with a group of Western performers on the WLS Chicago radio station. While in the Air Force, he sang at the Officer’s Club, throwing in a few stories between numbers. It was at this time, when, rewarded by surprising laughter, he was encouraged to develop the natural, frozen-faced delivery for which he is best known today. Also included in the Coliseum show are the singing team, Dick and Dee Dee, and a “rock and roll” singer Dee Dee Sharp, famous for her record breaking hit “Mashed Potato Time.” For information concerning tickets, write to Ticket’s Indiana State Fair, Indianapolis, Indiana 46205. Prices range from $2.00 to $3.50.
TWO LITTLE LETTERS It isn’t Rural Delivery, Radio Diffusion, Relatives Departing, or Raspberry Delight. All those things can be very nice, and the initials RD can be used to denote any of them. But more and more those two innocent-looking letters are coming to be known as the smybol of something that should not happen: Respiratory Disease. Time was, and not so long ago, when a persistent cough was generaly thought of as a homey, comfty-like, almost friendly sort of thing. Some people never coughed when they had a cold, others seemed to cough all the time, and what difference did it make? The difference it made—and still makes—is that a chronic cough is a sympton of disease of the breathing apparatus. That’s how it is, too, with labored breathing. You start getting older, and you develop shortage of breath, and it all seems so natural. That was the theory. The fact is—and people have only recently been catching

on—that shortness of breath isn’t a bit nautral. Within the last few years this common type of aliment has been recognized as a major health problem. Short-term respiratory diseases alone, including influenza and the common cold, cost the nation more in lost time than any other group of acute illnesses. Chronic RD includes such serious difficulties as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, tuberculosis. Cigarette smoking and air pollution, those two side effects of modern civilization, have been directly associated by medical experts with the evident widespread increase of some respiratory diseases. What to do? Your Christmas Seal association, which devotes itself to an all-out fight against tuberculosis and other forms of RD, suggests a visit to your doctor the minute you realize the chronic cough or shortness of breath has set in. You can’t lose a thing; you might win better health and longer life.
