x flashlight beam cut through the inky blackness of the burial chamber. ... Jl L— The rasping sound of stone against stone carried through the still, stale air as the heavy lid of the sarcophagus was raised. George Andrew Reisner peered into the coffin that had been undisturbed for thousands of years. “Gentlemen,” he said, slowly, “I regret Queen Hetepheres is not receiving.” And so it was that the great moment of this famous Indianapolis-born Egyptologist’s career brought disappointment that day in March, 1927. He had discovered the lost tomb of the mother of the great pharaoh Khufu, one hundred feet under the pyramids of Gizeh. Only to find the Queen’s mummy had disappeared! To this day, the fate of the remains of Queen Hetepheres is unknown. But the contents of the tomb shed important new light on the history of ancient Egypt. Reisner worked on to recapture for all time many glories of the distant past. This brilliant Hoosier scholar was honored around the world and, today, his books and teachings are guiding modern archeologists as they seek to unearth the mysteries of early civilizations. And the march of progress in archeology has been paralleled in another science—communications. Witness communications via space satellite; automatic dialing telephones; DDD; transmission of data by telephone. The future? “Face-to-face” conversation by Picturephone; communication on beams of light; worldwide DDD —Bell Labs is at work on these, too. When practical, Indiana Bell will bring them to you. It’s all done with one objective: to maintain your telephone service as the finest in the world.
Don't "Do ft Yourself" Do-It-Yourself can be fun. Then again, it can lead to something approximating disaster. It depends on what your little old self is doing. Do you like home-style shelf building, dressmaking, painting, paper doll cutting-out? Enjoy, enjoy! On the other hand, does your taste run to amateur medical practice, like diagnosing your own ailments? Better come off it; you might do yourself right into a sick bed that wouldn’t be any fun at all One kind of do-it-yourself doctoring seems to tempt a lot of people. Cough judging, some call it; others have nicknamed it “bronchial Russian roulette.” How is it done? You listen to your own or your friends’ coughing and come up with an instant diagnosis. “Pay it no mind—just a cigarette cough,” is-one of the more popular refrains. “Frog in my throat again,” is a runner-up. “The dampness is what does it,” is a wide favorite, too. Actually, the people who really know the score about such matters—those with the letters “M.D.” after their names—point out that a persistent cough is one of the last things in the world you can dismiss with a burst of homespun philosophy. A cough that won’t go away after three or four weeks, or one that keeps coming back, can be a symptom of RD—Respiratory Disease, which means a disorder of the breathing system. Such disorders can be mild, or they can take the form of a serious disease such as emphysema, lung cancer, or tuberculosis. Smoking can certainly contribute to a chronic cough. If you can’t get rid of your cough, save your amateur talents for less important matters and make tracks for your doctor. Some useful hints about Chronic Cough have been published in a free

RED CROSS CLASSES _ As the metropolitan area of Indianapolis expands in population, the Indianapolis chapter of the American Red Cross is offering an increasing number of classes—in first aid, water safety, and home nursing—to a growing number of individuals. The Indianapolis Red Cross chapter now has jurisdiction in four counties Marion, Morgan, Hendricks and Hancock counties. Added interest In local Red Cross classes is attributed not only to a general increase in population, but to a soaring highway accident rate, a greater demand for education in general, and to the rapid growth in the number of both private and neighborhod swimming pool. The American Red Cross urges that all persons over 14 years of age be trained in first aid. Red Cross first aid instructors acquaint persons with safety hazards at home, at work and on the highway, teach accident prevention, and prepare class members to administer life-saving techniques. Water safety programs are held indoors and outdoors, in both city and privately owned pools. In a 12 month period in 1963-64, the Indianapolis Red Cross conducted 965 swimming, life-saving and water safety and issued 9,974 certificates in these programs. The Red Cross holds mother and baby classes for expectant parents, grandparents and other interested persons. Instruction includes the newest techniques in caring for newborn infants. The Red Cross recommends that at least one person in each home be trained in care of the sick and injured. 32 basic nursing skills are taught in the free Red Cross care of the sick and injured

But. before we get too starry-eyed about it, let’s consider whether there are any gaps in the total picture. Is it or isn’t it a stopper, for example, when the National Institute Of Dental Research informs us that half the children in the United States under 15 yean of age have never been to a dentist? Can we really feel cozy about the whole thing when we learn from the same authentic source that the number of untended cavities in American teeth adds up to a round billion? Again, can we be complacent when we learn that millions of

people suffer loss of teeth because of diseased gums and adjacent mouth tissue? Nor is that all. Not long ago a public health officer called attention to the fact that eight million American children need orthodontic treatment, that is, corrective care to prevent permanent disfigurement of the mouth or jaw. He cited, as reasons ignorance or apathy on the part of the parents, inability to pay, lade of available dentists, and difficulties of transportation. While it’s true that George Washington achieved immortality despite a set of ill-fitting wooden choppers, dental neglect is anything but an aid to health or welfare. Neglected teeth and gums aren’t just the enemies of good looks, digestion and comfort; they can lead to serious systemic disease. Your Christmas Seal association suggests that you convert an ancient saying into a modern family program: Get a dental checkup at least twice a year!
