REDUCE CHARGES ON LONG DISTANCE CALLS Reduced charges on long distance telephone calls became effective recently, and the time when bargain rates apply were broadened. Indiana Bell Division Manager C. R. Barkman said the new rate schedules affect both calls within the state and those crossing state lines. The changes will save Hoosiers about $2.5 million a year. Bargain rates for nighttime station-to-station calls now apply after 8 pm. daily—instead of after 9 p.m. as in the past and also all day on Sundays. The new rate for a three-minute night or Sunday station-to-station call will be 40 cents or less within the state and $1 or less anywhere in the continental United States. Most calls would cost less than the 40 cents and $1 maximums because of distance between phones. Many evening rates which apply from 6 to 8 pm. have been reduced, and the evening schedule now also applies all day on Saturdays. Adult Education Courses Robert M. Smith, former president of the Indiana State Association for Adult Education, and currently field consultant in adult education at Indiana University, will conduct a course in Indianapolis during the spring semester for people interested in adult education activities. STUDENT SPEAKER'S BUREAU OFFERS SERVICE Attention luncheon and servcie club members: If you have trouble locating guest speakers or people for special programs, Indiana University students may have the answer you’ve been looking for. The I.U. Student Speaker’s Bureau, operated by the Department of Speech and Theatre, is now offering its spring program of discussions and debates. These include 10 topics covering a wide range of current events, from poverty in the U.S. to prayer in the public schools; specific interest areas, such as businessmen’s tax problems, and scholarships and financial aids available to incoming college students; and fun areas such as an illustrated talk on the history of the Ohio River’s showboats. Students who participate in the Bureau are selected on the basis of their exceptional speaking ability. Many of them have had personal experiences related to the issues they discuss. Each speech is prepared under the supervision of a faculty member in I.U.’s Department of Speech and Theatre. The average length of each program is about 30 minutes, with a question-and-answer session concluding the presentation. The Bureau usually operates within a 50-mile radius of Indiana’s Bloomington campus, but exceptions are made. The only charge to those interested in using the Bureau’s 4 services is transportation cost, at seven cents per mile, and reimbursement to students for any necessary meals. Donald W. Zacharias, instructor in speech and theatre, handles program scheduling for the Bureau. Indiana Hair Design Guild The Indiana Hair Design Guild will meet February 21, 22, and 23.
