SCHOOL NEWS (Continued from Page 1) test at Speedway, 8:00 a.m. Feb. 20: All School Dance, 8:1511:15. Feb. 24, 25, 27: Sectional Basketball Tourney. Seniors have selected the HerffJones Company from which to purchase commencement invitations. Individual orders will be placed on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 16. Orders will not be accepted after this date. In the solo and ensemble contest held last Saturday Speedway music students won six first division placements, eight second division, and one third division. Those receiving first division placements were: Ruth Ann Gallatin, Candy Walker, Linda Hackett, Jane McCallister, Donna Troutman, and a comet trio, Kurt Young, Marla McCormick, and Todd Conover. The Speedway speech group won the second place trophy at the contest held at Lafayette Jeff last week in which 36 schools competed. New Haven placed first for the fourth consecutive year. Individual awards were earned by the following Speedway students: Jim Keating, Ist in varsity oratory declamation and 4th in dramatic declamation; Lynn Schoenewey, 3rd in varsity oratory; Linda Kutch, 2nd place in junior varsity oratorical; Jim Seitz, 2nd place in radio announcing; Ruth Muir, 2nd in varsity humorous interpretation; Alex Williams, 2nd in junior varsity humorous interpretation; and Chris McMahon, sth place in junior humorous interpretation. Speedway’s swim team won the first place trophy at the Muncie Burris swim meet held last Saturday. Earlier in the week they won a dual meet with Franklin 58-37. In the sectional wrestling meet Jerry Gutheridge placed second in his weight class and Mike Lyman placed third in his weight class. In scheduled wrestling meets the Speedway reserves won over Brownsburg 33-19 and the varsity team won over Brownsburg 29-15. The Speedway 7th grade team won an invitational basketball tourney at Decatur Central by defeating Mooresville 25-24 and then winning the final game over
Decatur Central 48-26. Other basketball scores during the past week: Speedway varsity 87, Arlington 65. Decatur Central varsity 75, Speedway 73. Speedway reserves 47, Arlington 46. During the 1940’s and 50’s, drug treatments were developed that helped significantly toward the arrest and cure of tuberculosis. And presently people were saying, “It’s all over—that’s that,” with never a thought to who might need some of that arrest and cure. Now, nearly 15 years later, TB is still very much with us. Although the new drugs have made great inroads, about 110,000 people in the U.S. have active TB today. There are about 54,000 new cases and 10,000 relapses each year. Card Party To Underwrite Cost Of Marian College AvniOTic Awaras The annual Blue & Gold Card Party of Marian College, sponsored by the Parents and Friends Organization, will be held Thursday, February 18, at 8:00 pm. in the Students’ Lounge of the college, 3220 Cold Spring Road. Admission will be $1.25 per person. Valuable attendance prizes will be awarded during the card party, in addition to an attractive prize for each table. WHITE VIOLET BALL Mrs. Jack A. Denison is general chairman of the fourth annual White Violet Ball sponsored by the Indianapolis Alumnae Association of Zeta Tau Alpha. The dance will be from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. February 20 on the third floor of the Columbia Club. Buffet dinner will be served from 7 to 9. Asssiting Mrs. Denison are Mrs. Merrill R.
