OKRA in just a few days opfcra lovers are going to hear this famous opening statement “Good afternoon opera lovers, in the United States and Canada. This is Milton Cross welcoming you to another complete opera performance originating live direct from the stage of the world-famous Metropolitan Opera House in New York City." The phrase, delivered in Milton Cross’ deep resonant voice, is familiar to poera lovers everywhere who each week tune in the broadcasts on WIRC-FM Indiana College Radio and da WAJC-FM Butler University. And—the man who delivers that phrase at the beginning of each Saturday afternoon broadcast is as familiar to opera listeners as the "Toreador Song” from “Carmen.”
Many so his fans in the radio audience can still recall the first time the veteran announcer and the Metropolitan Opera joined forces on the air-waves. It was on Christmas Day, back in 1931, before Texaco’s sponsorship began, and the opera was “Hansel and Gretel.” Since then, Mr. Cross' has taken his place in his small booth in the Grand Tier of the venerable Metrolpolitan Opera House for more than 500 performances. He has never missed a broadcast Radio stations WICR-FM, 88.7 on the FM dial and WAJC-FM, 104.5 on the FM dial will carry the 25th anniversary opera season this year in a unique relationship of cooperation as they are the only two stations within the same city carrying the Metropolitan Opera.

TRAFFIC SAFETY Floyd A. Kline, Sr., Director of the Indiana Office of Traffic Safety, today called Hoosiers attention to the Christmas through New Year’s holiday period—from December 24th, 6 p.m. through January Ist, midnight. The number of traffic deaths over the year-end holidays has shown an increase ... in 1961, there were 21 fatalities—in 1962, there were 29 traffic deaths—and in 1963, there were 40 fatalities for the same period. In view of the anticipated heavy traffic, Mr. Kline estimates that this year there could be from 35 to 45 traffic deaths, during the Christmas through New Year’s holiday period. Due to the increase in the number of vehicles on the road, the number of miles traveled, the higher rates of speed, plus the load of Christmas packages stacked on the rear ledge of the car blocking the view through the back window . . . there is much greater need for safe driving practices now, than at any other time during the Mr. Kline said. The uncertainties of the weather ahead require that you double-check the family car before you load up your family and take off for the holidays. With the exception of Thanksgiving, this is a holiday season when more families will be on the move in the family car. Many people will be traveling the new super-highways over the holidays, giving rise to more potential ac-cident-provoking traffic emergencies. One of the greatest dangers is loss of control When jumping the divider strip resulting in head-on collisions that can wipe out a whole family. Recent reports indicate that there is a much higher number of one-car accidents (without colliding with another vehicle) than ever before. Such accidents are usually due to loss of control and either striking an object along the roadway, or leaving the roadway and rolling over. Auto-train collisions increase during cold weather, due to windows being closed and the accumulation of frost and ice on the windshield. No one should try to drive during this holiday period without first being willing to accept their personal responsibility for accident prevention. (
