•To My Many Speedway Friends It’s as big a mystery to me as it is to some of you, just why my name was placed on the sign at the entrance to what is now the John Leonard Park. It surely must be to commemorate the sixteen years which I spent as a member of the Town Board beginning in 1926 when Speedway was first incorporated as a town. During those early years, a few problems arose, the solutions of which helped to guide the destiny of Speedway. One of the accomplishments of which we are justly proud was the acquisition of this land where the Park now exists. This land was purchased primarily for water wells and elevated tank site. Later, we built the combined Town Hall and Fire Department Building. We finally woke up to the need of a playground which the Park Board has seen fit to name after me. It is with great pride and humility that I accept this honor. It is my desire and fondest hopes that this Park will provide many years of wholesome recreation and enjoyment for the people of Speedway. John Leonard, 1940 Cunningham Road WESTWOOD SWIMMERS AT SHAKAMAK Twenty-eight swimmers from Westwood Country Club participated in the annual meet at Shakamak State Park Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 28, 29 and 30. First place trophy for boys 14 and under was won by Westwood, with Tom Geiman winning first place individual honors and Paul Klotzbier placing second individually. Third {dace went to Westwood Men (12 and over) and overall First Place trophy for Boys and Men (combined) going to Westwood team. One of the events offered is a 1,000 lb. Boy’s Relay and is called the Jim Clark Memorial Event. This means that the 10 boys who swim this 500 meter event cannot, with combined weights, exceed 1,000 lbs. The Westwood team won this with the following swimmers: Gary Lish, Bill Osborn, Cas Clark, Larry Lish, Terry Hart, Jerry Lish, Jim Geiman, Kenny Herrick, Steve Bailey and Paul Klotzbier.
