SOME BITING TRUTHS The good old pastime—or vice of ducking dentists appointments can result in something more than just a toothache or a lost incisor, especially for the young. In fact, it can give rise to something so unpleasant that an Oregon doctor has come up with a special name for it “Crippled faces,” according to Dr. R. W. Kullberg, a public health official in Portland, can be the outcome for children who fail to receive proper corrective treatment for malformed teeth or jaws. This involves a special kind of dentistry called orthodontia; and the sad fact is, Dr. Kullberg adds, that only one child out of five in the United States who needs it is now getting it. For this situation he blames a variety of causes, including ignorance or apathy on the part of parents, inability to pay for treatment, a lack of available dentists, and difficulties of transportation in rural areas. “Displacement or crowding of teeth, or a grossly disturbed rela-
tionship of one jaw to another, are conditions of malocdusion which are found much too often,” Dr. KuHberg said. He described malocclusion, a condition to whteh the upper and lower teeto fail to close evenly, as “one es the most neglected types of dental defects.” While he is young, a child won’t thank his parents for taking him to a dentist regularly. Far from it! Indeed, no child ever recognizes all that his parents have done for him. But—with or witnout thanks —the wise parent will try to find regular dental care. If money stands in the way, free or inexpensive care sometimes may be located by asking the doctor, health department, or dental society. Accident statistics reveal that some 80,000 persons are injured in the United States each year through the improper use of rotary power lawn mowers The INDIANA FARM SAFETY COUNCIL urges that only adults or responsible children over 16 be permitted to use power mowing equipment.
