GIRL SCOUT NEWS TROOP 656, Patrol 471 returned from the Girl Scout New York World’s Fair Tour conducted by Miller Tours. Other points of interest were a bus tour of Manhattan which included the Theatre district. Garment district and China Town, the Bowery, Greenwich Village and Wall Street. They visited the top of the Empire State Bldg., United Nations Bldg., NB.C. Studios, saw the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall and a boat trip around Manhattan. The tour was privileged to visit the General Motors Bldg, at the Fair after closing hours to avoid the waiting in line. Those attending were Janice Atkinson, Lynn Schoenewey, Mary Schrock, Jane Scott, Chris Solt, Linda Walker, and Susie Young. Mr. and Mrs. Burdell Scott were the adult advisors. There were 130 Girl Scouts and leaders on the tour which traveled via Pennsylvania Railroad. The girls have been earning money for this trip for 3 years. The P. J. Phals Patrol spent a week camping at Raccoon State Park near Rockville, Indiana. Those attending were Patty Brooks, Pat Feucht, Sue Grimes, Helen Hoerger, Linda Slattery, and Janet Zeiher. Mrs. John Slattery and Mrs. T. A. Feucht were the adult advisors.
Westwood Duplicate The Westwood Duplicate Bridge Club held a special event, Mixed Pairs, on Tuesday, June 30, 1964. The winners were: 1. Mrs. Harrison J. Blind and Tom E. Bernhardt. 2. SPSDWAY JAYCEE DRIVING ROAD-E-O The Speedway Jaycees will hold its annual Teen-age Safe Driving Road-E-O Saturday, July 11, 1964. It will be held at the Speedway Shopping Center, (the Southeast corner) from 9 to 12 noon. The Road-E-O is open to any licensed teen-age driver who is going to school or who has already graduated. All students are urged to enter this event which is conducted for the purpose of stimulating improved driving skill. Parking, backing, distance judging and turning are all involved in the manual test.
The Speedway winner will then go to the State Contest which also will be held in Speedway. The National Road-E-O will be held in Washington, D. C. to which the state finalist will be sent with an all-expense paid trip. This is a wonderful opportunity for any teen-age driver from Speedway to win this trip plus one of the scholarships being offered. J. A. GEIMAN L Joseph A. Geiman was installed as president of the Speedway Lions Club at their 25th annua) meeting held June' 24 at the Student Union Building, 1 U. Medical Center. The meeting was conducted by retiring president, Carl Baldauf, who welcomed guests. During brief remarks, Lion Baldauf thanked his officers and committee chairmen as well as all members of the dub for their splendid cooperation during his year as The Lions and Lionesses were entertained by Rick Stanton, pianist; Donna Spencer, vocalist, and Sherrill Marshall, accorionist. The speaker was Ralph Deckard, past International Director from District 25-E, who also installed officers for the coming year. The new officers are: Joseph A. Geiman, president; Carl N. Watson W. Rich " First Bank and Trust Company today announced the appointment of Watson W. Rich to head a new Travel Department of the Bank to open July 17. Mr. Rich was a Captain in the Merchant Marines during World War Two, and has been in the travel business for the past 15 years. He has been an airline manager and manager of travel bureaus in Gary and Chicago, and was general manager of an Indianapolis Travel Bureau before joining First Bank and Trust The Travel Department will be located at First Bank and Trust’s main office, 5300 Crawfordsville Road.
MISSIONARY JOHNSON GUEST SPEAKER AT METHODIST CHURCH 1 Rev. G. T. Johnson will be guest speaker at the Speedway Methodist Church at both worship services, Sunday, July 12, 9:00 and 10:45 ajn. The sermon will be followed at 9:45 am. by an informal discussion, led by Rev. and Mrs. Johnson regarding their work in India. For a year before going to the Poona Church, Mr. Johnson was in charge of a boys hostel related to the Methodist School in Gohdra. During a previous term of missionary service, 1949 to 1954, he was youth director for the Gujarat Methodist Conference and in charge of a village boys hostel near Baroda. He also did evangelist work in surrounding villages. Born in Clarksfield, Minn., Mr. Johnson attended Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky., and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He has his B.D. degree from Garrett Theological Seminary, Evanston, HL He received a Masters of Arts from Northwestern University. The Speedway Church recently assumed one-half of the support of the Johnson Family as their own missionaries in India. The community is invited to hear this world traveler and missionary. ROBERT H. SHIELDS Services for Robert H. Shields were at 8:30 am. Wednesday in Conkle Speedway"’Funeral Home and 9 am. in St Christopher Catholic Church. He was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery. Shields, 47, veteran law enforcement officer and former executive secretary of the Indianapolis Board of Public Safety, suffered a fatal heart attack at his home, 1806 N. Auburn, Sunday. Shields had been with W. A. Brennan, Inc., a firm handling commercial and industrial real estate, since July, 1963, when he resigned from the Safety Board. He had been appointed to the board by former Mayor Albert H. Losche in November, 1962, following the election in which Shields, Democratic candidate for sheriff, lost to Republican James O. Hiner. Hiner died in October, 1963. Shields had served as executive officer for Marion County Sheriff Robert O’Neal from 1955 until February, 1962, when O’Neal was appointed a Federal marshal.
Before that. Shields was with the state police 14 years. He started as a trooper at the Lafayette post and was later promoted to lieutenant in charge of Post 11 in Marion County. Among major murder cases he investigated during his career were those involving Robert A. Watts and Michael T. Callahan and the fatal shooting of two Hammond policemen. He was a 1935 graduate of Cathedral High School and had attended police training institutes at Indiana, Purdue and Northwestern universities. Shields also attended the FBI National Academy and the U. S. Army Criminal Investigation School In World War H, he served in the Army’s criminal investigation division in the Chinese-Burma-India Theater. Shields was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Indiana Sheriff’s Association, Speedway post of the American Legion and St. Christopher Catholic Church. Survivors include the widow, Zora; two sons, Bill and Bobby; a daughter, Betty, all at home, and his mother, Mrs. Bertha Shields, Indianapolis. Martin's Shoes Announces Contest Winners Winners of the Red Ball Contests at Martin’s Shoes, 5910 Crawfordsville Road, Speedway Shopping Center, are as follows: Gary “Mike” Goodwin, 1241 N. Luett; Dan McCauley, 6001 Cadillac Drive; Randy Williams, Brownsburg, Ind.; Bill Dittos, 2346 Fisher; John Schoonover, 5050 W. 13th St. HON CUBS NEWEST ZOORKMNIS Punch and Judy, two eight-month-old lion cubs, are the newest residents of the Indianapolis Zoo. They arrived at their new home July 3. Ronald T. Reuther, zoo director, said the cubs are being housed in the Animal-of-the-Month exhibit immediately inside the zoo’s entrance. The cubs, a male and female, were born last November 4 and presently weigh between 80 and 100 pounds. They were loaned to the zoo by T. O. Philpott, president of the American Art Clay Company of Indianapolis, a wild animal collector who has been on several African safaris. Philpott brought the cub’s parents from Africa two years ago. The cubs were raised on milk from a bottle when small but now are fed beef and horsemeat supplemented with vitamins and minerals, according to Reuther. FIRST BANK AND tbs lew bcbtvbt TRUST KEPVKI Sanford P. Hunter, President of First Bank and Trust Company, with a main office at 5300 Crawfordsville Road, today announced a basic capital increase of $200,000 by sale of stock and transfer from undivided profits. Mr. Hunter said that this action makes it possible for First Bank and Trust to keep pace with the rapid growth of the bank and to expand services to the community. The action, which became effective June 30, increases the bank’s loan limit to $140,000, and total capital accounts now exceed one and onehalf million dollars. Mr. Hunter added that First Bank and Trust opened a fifth location, the first within Indianapolis, last month. SPEEDWAY WEEKDAY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION A new corporation has been organized by representatives of the Speedway Ministerial Association and five Speedway Churches.
