Esterline Angus (Continued from Page 1) acquisitions should increase the total dollar volume of Esterline Angus more than one-third. And our expansion will benefit the economy of Indiana. In fact, we feel Indiana, and more specifically Speedway, is an ideal location for the manufacture of our scientific and industrially oriented products.” “In addition,” he points out, “the expansion of the Esterline Angus line from within will enable us to chalk up more sales in 1964 than ever before.” Bearing out his statement are orders already received for the Speed Servo Recorder, a graphic recording instrument which is eight times faster than most compar-

able instruments. Like most new products which have quickly established themselves in consumer and industrial markets, this one involved a complete departure from conventional instrumentation thinking. Instead of endeavoring to manufacture a “me too” instrument, the Esterline Angus research and development staff decided to go competitors one better. They elimniated a lot of gears and pulleys which caused mechanical difficulties in comparable instruments after relatively short service. While important, revolutionary design is not the only thing Esterline Angus has going for it. For more than 60 years, the quality and long life of this company’s instruments have made them favorites of engineers and technicians in literally thousands of industrial plants and laboratories.
Craftsmen who have been with Esterline Angus from 20 to 45 years delight in recounting the most frequent complaint of sales representatives: “We wish you’d put time bombs in the instruments set to explode after 25 years. Think what it would do for our replacement market.” The ruggedness of these instruments is further documented by case histories. A submarine search balloon flying over our East Coast during World War II came apart at the seams. It was a total loss, but an Esterline Angus instrument survived the fall to the ground and was still operable when the debris was searched. Another instrument was discovered in an abandoned shed which had been taken over by a farmer’s chickens. A bit of checking by an Esterline Angus representative revealed that the shed had formerly been used by a neighboring industry. After several years of abuse, the recorder

operated perfectly. Essentially, Esterline Angus instruments write a series of lines on a chart to show the relationship between one or more quantities at different times. This enables the person using the instruments to understand better what has taken place. For example, a physician uses x-rays, microscopes and stethescopes to show him things hidden from ordinary observation. Men who are seeking undiscovered laboratory secrets, men who are looking into the ailments of machines, and men who are searching for methods to improve productivity of a company use Esterline Angus instruments to bring essential facts to light These versatile instruments are used in the missile program to monitor countdowns, in industry to analyze production faults, on refrigerated cargo ships to record temperatures, on the Canals of Venice to catch “hot rudders” who
operate their boats at too fast a speed and in hospitals to detect the eye disease, glaucoma. In fact, the use of Esterline Angus instruments is so broad it almost defies description. Quite frequently, the men who purchase these instruments devise new uses for them which surprise some Esterline Angus employees who have been in the business a number of years. So successful has Esterline Angus been in producing and improving instruments through more

than 60 years, that its factory representatives sell successfully in competition with such giants of industry as General Electric, Westinghouse and Texas Instruments. To keep pace with sales opportunities, sales offices in the United States and in 19 foreign countries have increased their staffs markedly. At the Speedway home office, too, employees have kept daily tab of a new addition which adds 22,500 sq. ft. of space. It houses the engineering and sales staff and is as modem and functional in design as new Esterline Angus instruments. The new structure has no windows, and is, therefore, air conditioned throughout. Mr. Eastin explains: “The concept of our new structure is taken directly from structures which dot the landscape at NASA installations such as Cape Kennedy and Huntsville, Alabama. They are solid, utilitarian and without windows. Some of the Cape structures make us feel we’re in our own plant because of the quantity of our instruments housed in them.”
