Health Organization (WHO), was observed around the globe April 7. This year its theme is tuberculous, with “No Truce for Tuberculosis” as its slogan. And it’s a peculiarly fitting subject for 1964, the 60th anniversary of the world's largest, most active organization formed to combat TB America’s own National Tuberculosis Association. In the 60 years of NTA’s existence the TB death rate in the United States has fallen spectacularly from 188 to 5.4 per 100,000. But the present rate of nearly 10,000 fatalities shows clearly that the problem has by no means been overcome. Infinitely worse, however, is the international picture, with an estimated world total of 15,000,000 sufferers from active TB and three to five million deaths each year. For the vast progress achieved in our own country we owe much to the relentless efforts of government health services local, state and national, plus the voluntary associations—the Christmas Seal organization and its more than 2,100 affiliated groups actively fighting TB and other respiratory diseases. No area is really safe from tuberculosis while the disease continues to flourish anywhere in the world. From our own stand-

point, as well as from the world view, we Americans have a practical interest in supporting World Health Day and helping the forces that struggle to roll back the international TB tide. FILMS AVAILABLE AT LOCAL INSURANCE OFFICE Films of the television documentary “The Twentieth Century” can be ordered free from Prudential’s Sppedway Office, 4912 West 16th Street, Speedway, by local school, civic, and other adult groups, Manager John J. Albert announced today. On request, the local office will make arrangements with Prudential's education department in Newark, N. J., to get the films, which cover the major events, problems and personalities of the past 60 years. Among the 90 titles available are: “Churchill, Man of the Century,” “Sports Cars: The Rage to Race,” "The College Panic,” “Rochne of Notre Dame,” "The Burman Surgeon,” and “First Man on the Moon.” “The Twentieth Century” has received television, educational, and public service awards for its subject matter and manner of presentation.
SAFER SURGERY Contagious diseases aren’t the only kind that have yielded ground to advances in medicine and surgery. While gall bladder disease continues to be a fairly common ailment, the death rate resulting from it has dropped 45 percent since 1950, according to figures published by a leading life insurance company. Better surgery, applied earlier, is the chief reason. Progress has been made in the development of anesthesia and in techniques of administering it Progress likewise has been made in preventing I and controlling infection. As a result, more people who part with their gall bladders retain their lives. Gall bladder disease is an ailment mainly of mature people. It is almost never seen in infants, and rarely occurs in children. For some reason not wholly clear, fewer women seem to have it now than formerly. It seems to happen most often to women who have had children; but since this group includes the -great majority of women, the fact may have little significance. The chance of developing gallstones increases with age, to a degree where one out of three people have them by the age of 75. But only in a minority of cases does severe infection result. However, when gallstones and gall bladder infection are present, some doctors maintain that the liver also may become involved and suffer serious damage. Because of this. hazard, doctors usually advise prompt surgery if an infected gall bladder becomes severely painful. If you have repeated attacks of abdominal pain, your Christmas Seal Association suggests that you see a doctor and find out whether any serious disorder may be threatened.
