Genial Germs Some types of germs are a good deal like people. At least they share one of our outstanding traits—sociability. Like many humans, they can move in on someone and be discreet “house guests” for quite a while without committing any overt offense that would get them evicted. Again like many humans, the longer they hang around the harder they are to get rid of.

All too often the invader’s presence is completely unsuspected until he’s managed to work serious harm on his innocent host That’s what can happen and frequently does—in the case of the tubeculosis germ. Although its toll in the United States has been greatly reduced, TB is still one of the worst killers on a worldwide scale. Even within our own borders there are more than two million people who have had the disease in active form and an estimated two million more who will develop it during their lifetime unless some effective actionj>revents it. Next to prevention, the best safeguard against disastrous effects is early detection and treatment. But this is often less easy than it may sound. By the time the effects of TB are felt, it usually has advanced to a point where cure is difficult and time-consum-ing. Your Tuberculosis Association emphasizes that detection, to be most useful, should come long before the stage where symptoms appear. A tuberculin skin test won’t prevent TB infection, but it’s Step One in your answer to that highly important problem of early detection. If test reaction is positive, implement Step Two—an immediate chest X-ray to find out whether the germ found in the body has become active.

TWO ENGINEERS PROMOTED AT ALLISON Two promotions within the engineering department of Aircraft Engine Operations at the Allison Division of General Motors were announced today by Gordon E. Holbrook, Director of Engineering for Engine Development. Warren L. Sommer was promoted to Assistant Chief Engineer of Production Engineering, succeeding J. C. Schmid who earlier was named Chief Engineer for Engine Design and Development. Paul Bancel, formerly Assistant Chief Project Engineer, succeeds Mr. Sommer as Chief Project Engineer for Engine Design and Development. Mr. Sommer, who was reared in Madison, Wis., and later was graduated from the University of Wisconsin, joined Allison in 1946 as a detail experimental test engineer. From 1953 through 1961, he was assigned as an engine project engineer, and in 1962 was named chief project engineer. Mr. Bancel, bom at Nutley, N. J., and educated at Wesleyan University and the University of Michigan, began his association with Allison in 1951 as a design and development engineer. He worked as a section head, chief and general supervisor of reduction gear design between 1955 and 1959, and in 1962 was named to his most recent assignment.

Hoarding Time: Squandering Health *1 Didn’t Have Time.” It’s a famous phrase, a top contender in the saddest-words-of-tongue-or-pen sweepstakes. In fact, it would probably beat “It Might Have Been” by several lengths if they were ever matched in the same race. One of the things that many people don’t think they have time for is a precautionary visit tq the doctor. Practically every citizen agrees in principle that this is a jim dandy idea and everybody else ought to take care of it right away. As for himself, he’ll get around to it real soon, but right at the moment he doesn’t have time. c True, the possibility exists that it wouldn’t make any practical

difference even if he postponed his visit to the doctor for months or years. But the possibility also exists that a medical checkup at this particular moment might nip developing disease in the bud, avert long illness, perhaps even prolong life. To tell the truth, it happens every day. And most rational souls would consider an hour snatched from the daily routine a very reasonable price to pay. i ' As one doctor put it, speaking of a too-busy, too-tardy patient: “He put off medical examination for years until he had a chronic disabling disease. Now what good is he going to get out of the time he saved by not going to the doctor.” March, the month of spring cleaning, auto tuneups, front yard spruce-ups, is a good month for your own physical checkup. Your Christmas Seal association says: Do it now! FLYER NOTICE Due to the number of people who call in classified ads and then forget to pay, we are enforcing the rule that all ads must be paid
