Disappearing Act People keep on asking, “Why all the talk about tuberculosis 'when everybody knows it’s disappearing fast?” The answer is that there’s a crucial difference between real disappearance and a “disappearing act” The alleged disappearance of TB is more apparent than real. Tuberculosis staged a dramatic upsurge in the first six months of 1983 in New York City, for example, with the health commissioner reporting a sharp rise in the case rate—the first increase in 10 years. Chicago, despite a moderate decrease, reported a continuing TB situation that made an all-out struggle on the part of health forces. True, there has been some basis tor the general notion that TB is “on the way out.” Since the introduction of highly effective drugs” in tuberculosis treatment, beginning with streptomycin in the mid-forties, there has been a gratifying decline in the rate of new cases and deaths throughout the United States. Only in recent years have these “wonder drugs” given rise to “wonder germs”—strains of the tubercle bacilli that have learned 'to adapt themselves to the action of the drugs and to withstand their effects. Determined research is now going on in various quarters to develop further improved drugs that will overcome the new resistance. This is a slow, gradual business. Meanwhile the vigorous case detection and prevention campaigns carried on against TB by your Christmas Seal organization continue the year round. And that, by the way, is one more reason why you should respond now to your Christmas Seal appeal if you didn’t get around to* it during the season.

Dr. Colston series for parents of teens Feb. 16, 23, and Mar. 1. Psychology of Adolescence is designed to help parents of teens better understand themselves as well as their teenagers! The series will be conducted on Sunday afternoons indicated from 3:00-4:30 p.m., in the Bethany Room. This program originated largely from the response of our youth workers to questions and problems in rearing and teaching young people today. It is hoped that parents of every jr. hi and sr>hi young person who comes to our church will feel welcome to participate—whether that parent is actually a member of our church or not. Dr. Lowell G. Colston is highly qualified. His particular responsibilities as Associate Professor of Pastoral Care, Christian Theological Seminary, in addition to clinical research and broad experience conducting sessions similar to ours assure us fruitful meetings. A combination presentation and discussion procedure will consider such problems as: what about freedom and responsibility? parents’ appraisal of themselves; how can parents be prepared to prepare teens for life-after-leaving-home? personal problems of parents and teens inter-related; what role, the church? Parents will be urged to consider particular questions prior to these sessions and will have opportunity to ask their own! Outlines and bibliographies far the series will be provided. Tell others; mark calendars!
