Beware of The Dog! Every year some 600,000 American get bitten by dogs. A little care and common sense could probably have avoided most of those bites. Almost any dog will bite you if you insist upon it, even your own cheristed pet. First of all, have your own dog

vaccinated against rabies. This is a virus disease of dogs, and some other animals, transmitted to man through a bite from the infected animal. At bite from a rabid animal is usually fatal to man, unless development of rabies is prevented by a series of inoculations —the Pasteur treatment. It is usually not wise to give a dog to a very small child. It’s true

that some toddlers manage beautifully to get along with a dog and some dogs will take almost anything in the way of rought treatment from a beloved youngster. But on the whole, it’s better to keep dog and child apart until the child is around six or so. Then you can teach him the following biteprevention rules:

Don’t tease the dog, he doesn’t enjoy it Don’t pull a dog’s tail or ears, or poke fingers into his eyes. Never try to take food away from a dog. Never interfere in a dog fight. Don’t waken a dog suddenly. Don’t run or bicycle with a dog if it gets him excited. Be wary of strange dogs.
