BROADWAY "HINTS" AT CLOWES Clowes Hall manager Travis Selmier this week confirmed earlier reports that the “most exciting package of Broadway hit shows to be offered in the nation” is now on sale. Five stellar plays make up the package—all Broadway hits, all with Broadway stars, together a composite of the best comedy, music and drama playing on the American stage today. Selmier pointed out that Indianapolis is one of the few cities in the nation to offer its own package of topnotch Broadway shows and the only city to present such a powerhouse of diversified entertainment value in one series. Beginning with “Beyond the Fringe”—named “best Broadway revue of the year”—Jan. 23 thru 25, Series Broadway also includes the shattering drama, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Jan. 27 thru 29; choice of “Ring Round the Moon” or “The Crucible” by the National Repertory Theatre, Feb. 3 thru 5; and, skipping to late spring, the lavish musical -spectacular, “Camelot,” May 4 thru 6 and the hilarious “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” May 11 thru 13. Series purchasers may order tickets, at the special Series discount, by performance numbers one thru four, that is, for either the first, second or third night each show is offered, or for the matinee performance of all shows. Series prices range from $32.00 to $12.75 (imagine a selection of five first-run Broadway shows for as little as $12.75). Purchasers must order the same performance of all shows. If past experience is a criterion, and in view of the fact that Clowes Hall recently honored its 50,000th patron in 44 days of operation, purchasers would be well advised to make their sea tand performance selections early, according to Selmier, who also pointed out that Series Broadway season tickets will make excellent gifts for Christmas. The opening show, “Beyond Fringe,” is the hit British import which duplicated its London success in New York. Four witty young men pour out satire, humor, fantasy and comic antics with rare taste and genius. Turning to serious drama, Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” a few days later digs relentlessly into the private lives of two faculty couples in a college town as they reveal themselves in the course of an evening. In the end there is scant room for sympathy, but the impact is stunning and unforgettable. The National Repertory Theater, which is a vital force in modem theater, presenting plays not often staged from a commercial viewpoint, will give local thea-ter-goers an opportunity to choose from two plays seldom presented outside New York City. “Ring Round the. Moon” concerns twin brothers, distracted by a hussy and saved by a maiden, and written with wit, comedy and intelligence. Its author is Frenchman Jean Anouilh. Arthur Miller wrote “The Crucible,” the other National Rep offering. It is superb American drama, centering around the Salem witchcraft trials, and other matters as timely today as in colonial America. The “Series” May offerings include the topnotch musical extravaganza, “Camelot” with its hit songs, the entrancing and amusing love story of King Arthur and his minx-like Queen Guinevere. Last show on the series, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” easily made its mark in New York as one of the funniest musical comedies to walk the boards. “Forum” has split-second comedy timing and steady straightforward humor, as it chuckles even at its own pseudo-classic Roman setting. Phone orders for the series are being accepted at Clowes Hall’s season ticket office, WA. 4-1306, and will be held for 48 hours.

Broiled or Barbecued Young Turkey Split a young “fryer-roaster" turkey (4 to 10 lbs.) Remove backbone (save for stock). Marinate overnight in one cup each of white and cooking oil seasoned with salt, fresh ground pepper and Va cup minced tarragon OR 2 Tbsp. dried tarragon (optional). Broil in rack over hot coals 1-1% hours. Test with a fork, but don’t overcook. OR, broil in broiler pan (not on rack) with skin side down, 7 to 10 inches from the heating element, for 1-1% hours, turning once or twice. In either case, brush frequently with the sauce during broiling.
