Attention All Homemakers Do you have those “every day meals” blues? Looking for a new dish for your holiday meals? This Speedway PTA has a suggestion. They are selling cookbooks with recipes from your friends and neighbors. The price is $1.25. They may be purchased from any PTA board member or call Mrs. Earl Scott AX. 1-5496, Mrs. Edward Tune, CH. 1-0772, Mrs. Charles Tremor AX. 1-7349, or Mrs. Doyle Lower, AX. 1-6834. In addition to recipes, it has a place in the front for lots of family information, such as special dates, insurance information, Christmas card list, and tables of weights and measures. Buy your cookbook today. P.S. They make a nice Christmas present too. Need A Chair Caned? Chair caning is only one aspect of employment offered the blind by the Indiana for the Blind. Right now, the agency can use your help. Work is needed to keep these skilled blind persons employed. The skills of these workers may be yours by bringing your chairs to the Indiana Agency for the Blind, 536 West 30th Street, or by calling WA. 3-3363 for details. LOCAL GOODWILL COLLECTION LOCATION An Indianapolis Goodwill Industries collection center has been established at the “500” Speedway Shopping Center, across from the 500-mile race track. Anyone may deposit Goodwill bags filled with discarded clothing, shoes, small household items in the brightly-colored yellow and blue Goodwill drop box any time during the day or night. It has been placed at the W. 16th St. entrance to the shopping center. Goodwill bags ready for filling are available at all times at the collection box. The discards deposited there will be picked up regularly by Goodwill trucks and taken to the industries’ plant at 1635 W. Michigan St. There handicapped workers will repair the discards and place them on sale at the eight non-profit Goodwill stores in Indianapolis. Larger items such as furniture, toys that will not fit into the dropbox will be picked up by Goodwill trucks at homes where requested. The Goodwill number is ME. 6-2541. Placing of the new drop box at the “500” Center is in line with Goodwill’s expansion of collections to meet the need of at least 2000 filled bags every day to keep some 350 handicapped workers on the job at the plant.
Turkey Time Turkey, the King of Poultry, provides a feast any time of the year. You can roast, broil or fry it easily for family and friends. A glance at the poultry counter of your favorite food store will assure you that turkey is available now at very attractive prices. Cold roast turkey served with refreshing lemonade or limeade and a crisp salad makes a meal fit for any king. One way to enhance the natural flavors and give it a rich golden finish is to baste your bird generously with a mixture of melted butter and lemon juice. The turkey can be roasting in a slow oven while you’re enjoying a favorite pastime. Turkey is fun to fix—barbecued or roasted. It comes in all sizes to suit every need from four pounds to 20 pounds and over. The 4-9 pounders are excellent for broiling, frying, roasting and barbecuing . . . perfect, too, for a small family and for eliminating an abundance of leftovers. The larger turkeys are convenient for serving a larger number of people and for families who like extra cooked turkey for later use. And, for those who prefer ease of preparation and a minimum of cooking in the summer, turkey is their answer, too. The cooked boneless, ready-to-eat turkey roll is only one of the many new turkey products now on the market. Since this turkey roll is already cooked when you buy it, you can Serve it cold or hot. This roll comes as all white or all dark meat, or a combination of both; and there is no shrinkage of weight. PERSONALS Forty-one from Marion County are among 377 outstanding junior >n ri senior students named to the 1963-64 Indiana University Student Foundation Committee. From Speedway was Jerry Ryan, 2113 N. Auburn. Each member is selected on the basis of interest, activities, and scholarship by the 13-member Little 500 Steering Committee and William & Armstrong, executive director of the L 17. Foundation.
Spit-Barbecued or Spit-Roaster Turkey Tie drumsticks close to tail with wings skewered or tied flat over breast. For the first 15 minutes, or until bird is golden brown, keep fire hot. Fire may then be lowered so bird sizzles mildly as it turns. For spit-roasting young turkeys, choose birds from 4-12 lbs. Start barbecue fire early to have coals burning well for low, steady heat. Rinse birds in cold water and pat dry. Rinse inside of birds with wine winegar for special subtle flavor accent. Brush birds with melted butter or margarine or for a simple but tasty basting or barbecue sauce try; equal parts of wine-vinegar, fresh lemon juice and olive or vegetable oil in a glass jar. Add a dash of soy sauce; salt and pepper to taste. Brush on meat before and during barbecuing. Refrigerate leftover sauce. For a spicy flavor, try the following recipe: Blend 1 teasp. salt, Vz teasp. pepper, 1 Tbsp. paprika and 1 Tbsp. sugar. Add Vz clove garlic OR Vz teasp. garlic salt, 1 medium onion, finely chopped, 1 cup catsup OR chili sauce and Vz cup water. Heat to boiling. Remove from heat. Add Vs cup lemon juice OR vinegar, 1.
