SCHOOL NEWS An informal open house at the new Howard J. Lacy Speedway High School will be held Wednesday night, Sept. 4, in order for patrons to view the new building. Further information about the open house will be given in future editions of the Flyer. Formal dedication ceremonies will be held later in the first semester. Physical examinations for varsity and freshman football will continue at 6 pjn., Aug. 9. Varsity practice will start Aug. 15 and freshman practice at 10 a.m. on Aug. 19. SPEEDWAY'S NEW TOWN ENGINEER V.v-* ’JklWILBUR M. FRANCIS New Town Engineer, Mr. Wilbur M. Francis, took office Aug. 1, 1963, replacing Mr. Edwin C. Kridler, who has been the Town Engineer since April 9, 1960 and has resigned. Mr. Francis is a registered professional engineer, having attended the Missouri School of Mines and the University of Illinois. Mr. Francis comes to Speedway from Springfield, 111., is married and has two children. He has purchased a home at 5348 Meadowood Drive. The Town Board of Trustees feel very fortunate in securing Mr. Francis as he has much experience and is well qualified to handle the engineering problems of Speedway. Clowes Hall Tour Another tour of Clowes Memorial Hall has been scheduled for Aug. 12 at 11 a.m., according to Mrs. Frank C. Springer, Jr., chairman of the Women’s Group now being formed to support season ticket sales and participate in other activities connected with the hall. The Aug. 12 tour is open to women throughout the area who are interested in joining the women’s group. Clowes Memorial Hall for the Performing Arts, now rapidly nearing completion on Butler University campus, plans a gala grand opening for the week of Oct. 18. The hall will soon be announcing its exciting programming for the 1963-64 season. Mrs. Springer pointed out that persons interested in joining the women’s group who are not able to attend the Aug. 12 event, are invited to contact Clowes Memorial Hall’s temporary office at the Language Center, 250 E. 38th St., for additional information.
Woodward Students Attend AGM Convention Students from the Woodward Academy of Music recently returned from a successful trip to the American Guild of Music contests in Buffalo, N.Y. Steve. Allee, 314 Heather Dr., received the President’s Award, an honor given to an outstanding student attending the Guild’s convention. Seven accordion students won top honors in solo divisions competing against contestants from throughout the United States and Canada. Solo trophies were awarded to Ronald Barrow, 3045 McClure, 2nd Place Advanced A; Debbie Medenwald, 5240 W. 15th St., 2nd Place Intermediate B; Janet Cervo, 2001 N. Alton, 3rd Place Intermediate A; Barbara Dippel, 4803 Manker, 2nd Place Junior E; Sandra Shepherd, 5506 Adelaide, 2nd Place Junior D; Jackie Smith, 5029 W. 13th, 3rd Place Junior B; and Steve Stafford, 4760 Payton, 2nd Place Elementary B. Barbara Dippel also received a 2nd Place in Elementary Piano. In band competition, the “Musicadets”, a Junior Accordion Band, well known throughout the Indianapolis area for their performances at churches, lodges, schools and on TV, won a first division trophy for their performance of the “Holy City.” Two Elementary first division band winners from Woodward were the “Commanders” and the “Sophistichords.” The “Nobleaires” and the “Treble Rebels,” two Junior Accordion Orchestras, won in first division and second division, respectively. The “Crescendoleers”, Woodward’s Senior Accordion Orchestra, placed in first division. Two Junior Ensembles from the Academy also were trophy winners, the “Polka-Dets,” first division, and the “Impressionaires”, third division. SOTH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. Walter W. Sanford will celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary next Sunday with an open house at the home of their daughter, Mrs. John M. Roach, 1058 Allison Ave. from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mr. Sanford is a retired trainman, having worked on the B. & O. until retirement in 1952. They have a son, Virgel L. Sanford, living in Saginaw, Mich. Friends are invited. PERSONALS The Miami University Deans’ List for the spring semester, comprised of all undergraduates who achieved averages of B or above for a course-load of 12 hours or more, totals 2,049 names, the Miami registrar’s office has announced. The list represents undergraduate students only, and these amounted to 7,363 of the 7,812 registered on the Oxford campus. Therefore, 27.8% of Miami’s undergraduates achieved academic averages of B or above. The list includes the following area names: Kathleen A. Smith, 1946 Cunningham Rd., Honor; Marcy L. Tower, 5332 West 16th Street, Honor. Mr. and Mrs. Leo H. Ridlin and son, Howard of 1707 Christopher Lane, Indianapolis, enjoyed a visit to Sarasota Jungle Gardens during their recent vacation on Florida’s Lower West Coast. Three graduates from Speedway spent two days at Ball State Teachers College this week participating in a freshman orientation program and enrolling for fall classes at the college. They were Dennis Gillespie, 5836 West 29th St.; Robert Davison, 2101 N. Fisher, and Elizabeth Esther Zimmerman, 1758 Christopher Lane.
Lions Baseball Hight Aug. 10th The Lions’ of Indiana annual baseball night at Victory Field will be held this year on Saturday night, Aug. 10. The game is sponsored by all of the Lion clubs of Indiana with proceeds going to benefit the Indiana Lions’ Cancer Control Center at the I.U. Medical Center. Lion Rex Campbell, 528 South Meridian St., is in charge of ticket sales. Lion Ray Ulrey, Mooresville, is chairman of the festivities. Pre-game attractions will include the Indiana All Lions State Band, which won first place award at the Lions International Convention at Miami this year. In the past years, Indiana Lions have been responsible for the obtaining of the cobalt bomb treatment machine so widely in use at the I.U. Center. They have also sponsored the first of other diagnostic and treatment machines.

Buy State Fair Tickets Locally And Save The 1963 State Fair gate admission tickets are now on sale at the Speedway Savings & Loan Association, 1520 Main Street, Speedway. Each advance sale ticket will admit one adult or one car at a cost of 50c a saving of 25c on each ticket. The Fair will run August 24th through September 4th. Morris Cohen, ACSW Executive Director An announcement by Charles E. Stemming, program committee chairman of the Senior Citizens’ Center, indicated that activities and services at the Center will continue through August. “Originally,” said Mr. Stemming, “we had planned to remain closed during a part of the summer. Now we are glad that we decided to remain open, because our daily attendance has continued to rise.” A variety of activities are being offered during the month of August, including classes in art, sewing, bridge, gardening and oil painting. Other events include card parties, bingo, square dancing, bridge tournament, films on travel, birthday parties and many more. Membership in the Center is open to any older adult resident in the Metropolitan Indianapolis area, at a cost of $2.00 per year.

Speedway Chapter O.E.S. The Ways and Means Committee of Speedway Chapter O.E.S. wishes to thank each and everyone who helped in any way at the Ice Cream Social. LOCAL COMPANY RECEIVES "E" AWARD Thomas L. Green & Company, Inc., 202 N. Miley Ave., local manufacturer of biscuit and cracker machinery, has been awarded President Kennedy’s “E” for excellence in export, according to a telegram from Luther H. Hodges, Secretary of Commerce, the first Indianapolis winner of the export “E”. Anthony J. Buchar, Chicago field office manager of the U.S. Department of Commerce, will bring the “E” Pennant and certificate to Indianapolis on Aug. 9 when the award will be made. Gov. Matthew E. Welsh will present the “E” Pennant and certificate. A ceremony at the plant is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. when the “E” Pennant will be raised and employees will be honored. Each will receive an “E” lapel pin and tribute will be paid to their achievements. Tours of the plant will be conducted from 10 to 11:30 a.m. A luncheon will be held at the Indianapolis Athletic Club. Thomas L. Green & Company, Inc. employs 70 persons. Exports are made around the world by the 70 year old company.

SPEEDWAY GIRL CROWNED MARION COUNTY* 4-H QUEEN Miss Dee Anna Malaska, 19, Speedway, a student nurse at University of Florida, was chosen Queen of the Marion County Fair last Sunday. She will reign through closing day, August 10. Miss Malaska, a Speedway High School graduate, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Malaska, 1667 Lincoln Road. Notice To Residents Of Speedway Trash Burning After Dark It has come to the attention of the Town Board of Trustees that some of the residents of our Town are burning trash after dark and causing quite a disturbance in the neighborhoods.
