ASTRONAUT READING CLUB On Friday of last week the Reading Club ended with 165 boys and girls of Speedway earning reading certificates. This is an increase over last summer. Practical Nurses Reunion The first reunion of the graduates of the Indianapolis School of Practical Nursing will be held, August 15 in Garfield Park. Pitchin supper at 6:00. Let’s make it a big one! You Come. Annual Volksfest Two of the oldest German Societies, the “Schwaben and Bayern,” are joining forces to sponsor the annual Volksfest at the German Park, 8700 S. Meridian Street, Saturday, August 3th, starting at 2 p.m. - Tunes, such as “Ach Du Lieber Augustin” or “Du, Du, Liegst Mir Im Herzen,” and many others will be played by Henry Hagemeiers Brass Orchestra from 4 o’clock on. Children will be entertained by contests and other activities. The kitchen will feature well known dishes such as Bratwurst, Sauerkraut and Kartoffell Salat (Potato Salad prepared by highly selected staff of ladies.) Albert Amthor will be chairman of the affair. The Schwaben Society was founded in 1868 and the Baverian Society two decades later. The Volksfest has become one of the highlights of the picnic seasons at the German Park and has attracted large crowds in the past. This years festival promises to carry on that tradition. Everyone is cordially invited. County Fair Opens Sunday The 32nd edition of the Marion County Agricultural and 4-H Fair begins its annual week-long stand this Sunday (August 4) at the fairgrounds, Troy Avenue and Fisher Road, near Five Points in the Southeastern part of the county. The local exposition will officially open at 1 p.m. The 1963 Marion County Fair queen will be crowned at 3 p.m. in the new coliseum. The midway rides and shows will be open beginning at 1 p.m. An old-fashioned balloon ascension is set for 7 p.m. Other events scheduled for Sunday include a baton twirling contest, a junior talent contest in the coliseum and a concert by a 50-piece accordion band.
Restaurant Convention The Queen of the 1963 Indiana Restaurant Association Convention will be selected August 6, during the annual IRA golf outing at Lafayette, Indiana. More than 150 members are expected to attend the outing. The Queen will be chosen from among six finalists by a committee of judges from Purdue University, and these six finalists will be chosen in turn by an IRA show committee from photographs of waitresses at IRA member restaurants. The 1963 IRA Convention, Show and Management Institute scheduled for October 16, 17 and 18 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, will be the thirtieth annual event of its kind and the first one in which the Indiana Motel Association joins in a venture called “Project Gemini.” The Queen will be called “Miss IRA of the Space Age.” Indpls. Hiking Club The Indianapolis Hiking Club will hike the Tow Path on Sunday afternoon, August 4. We have eight teams pitching each Wednesday from about 6:30 till after dark. Next year we have been promised lights for these courts. We hope next year to have leagues on three or four nights. The Thursday night league is moving along. New pitchers have been showing up and everyone is having fun. There are still openings on Thursday night for any interested people. These leagues are being conducted very informally this first year with pitching and having a good time the prime objective. Next year these two leagues should be solid and teams formed so that the league will function more like a bowling league with matches against teams from other leagues. Commencement Speaker Indiana Congressman Richard L. Roudebush will speak at Butler University’s summer commencement at 5 p.m. August 2 in the Hilton U. Brown Theater. A native of Noblesville, Roudebush is serving his second term in the U. S. House of Representatives from the Sixth Indiana District. Dr. Alexander E. Jones, Butler president, will award the diplomas. There are 180 candidates for degrees in liberal arts and sciences, education, business administration, pharmacy, music and graduate instruction. Card of Thanks The family of RUTH A. * Loren L. Lind announces that he is a candidate for the Speedway Town Board, subject to the Primary August 27th and the General Election November 5, 1963. Mr. Lind resides with his wife, Margaret and his two children Warren and Karen at 1672 Lincoln Road and has resided in Speedway for 15 years. In the past he has been active in Cub and Boy Scouts activities, Little League Baseball and other Civic affairs. He was also one of the leaders in the 1-465 controversy with the State of ndiana to prevent another Disastrous Flood which Speedway residents suffered in 1957. He was also one of the many citizens who fought to preserve the independence of our school system from the Metropolitan school system. Mr. Lind has been employed by the Indiana Insurance Company for 15 years and has had 25 years Public Relations experience. He is a member of the Speedway Christian Church, Speedway Masonic Lodge, Sahara Grotto, Westwood Country Club and is also a member of the Auxiliary Force of the Speedway Police Department. His Platform and Pledge to the Citizens of Speedway are as follows:
1.1 will always fight to retain Speedway Independence from annexation by Indianapolis. 2. Pension for our Police and Firemen which they so rightfully deserve. 3. Continued improvement of our Fine School System and complete independence of our schools from any Metropolitan School System. 4. Equal representation and consideration for any and all Citizens in all sections of Speedway. 5. Endeavor to eliminate existing flood conditions and speed up flood control measures by County and State. 6. Improve streets when and wherever needed and provide sewers whenever desired by majority of citizens in any section of our city. 7. Encourage and welcome any new industry which may wish to locate in our city and a continued effort to reduce our taxes which we are all so vitally interested in today. Your -a A Play Ground News The Peanut League play-offs were won by the Redlegs of Meadowood Park. The Redlegs defeated the Braves, which were the champions of the Main Park in the semi-finals. The Redlegs then overwhelmed a team which was made up of the Dodgers and the Lions from the 22nd Street diamond for the championship of the Speedway Parks. The 22nd Street team was composed of many first-year ballplayers. In a few years we expect a real strong team from this area. A most-val-uable-player was chosen by the players and coaches of each team. The following boys were chosen: Redlegs, Tom Ray; Yellow jackets, Mark Leonard; Indians, Jack Ehle; Tigers, Dennis DeLong; Braves, Jessy Cassidy; Blue Flashes, Bobby McAllister; Yellowjackets (Main Park), Eddie Goddard; Dodgers, David Lloyd; Lions, O’Donnell; Dodgers (22nd Street), Greg Kelleher. The Junior High Basketball tournament is completed. Neat’s Messes were the champions and all the boys on the winning team were awarded trophies.
Instruction courses for the 1963 Tennis Clinic were well attended by seventy-five participants. The tournament, following the instructions, began July 22. The winners of the Tennis tournament are as follows: Girls’ singles —Div. 1., Chris Phillips. Div. 11, Cathy Hutchison. Boy’s singles— Div. I, George Heaney. Div. 11, David Crumley. Mixed Doubles, Chris Phillips and George Heaney. Tanks to Mr. Dick Hissam for providing the winners of the tennis clinic with beautiful trophies. Dick has for many years been actively interested in our park functions and we appreciate it very much. This ends the Park supervision program for another year and we can all scatter on our vacations now. I, personally, would like to thank Miss Middaught, Miss Allen, Mr. Mattingly and my old backstop, Jim “Gabby Hartnett” Richwine and the kids for which this program was originated. It has been another pleasant experience working with all the park people of Speedway. I hope the kids have had a good time, because, in simple language, that’s our job. See you next summer. Belles, Local Representative of the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, Nationwide Mutual Fire Insurance Company and Nationwide Life Insurance Company at Speedway City is one of 37 Agents attending the Family Security Service Training Program being conducted by Nationwide Insurance of Columbus, Ohio, from July 22 to August 2 at the Lincoln Lodge, Columbus, Ohio. Cadet Eugene Enlow has just returned home from R.O.T.C. Camp at Fort Riley, Kansas. Gene was ranked Ist in his company and received an award for outstanding cadet from General Dodge at the Regimental Review for being number one cadet from Purdue and ranking in the top five of the 2900 cadets attending camp. UNION CARBIDE DECLARES DIVIDEND The board of directors of Union Carbide Corporation has today declared a quarterly dividend of ninety cents (90c) per share on the outstanding capital stock of the corporation payable September 2, 1963, to stockholders of record August 6, 1963. The last qarterly dividend was ninety cents (90c) per share paid June 1, 1963.
Theatre In The Woods The first Edward Albee oneact play, “The Sandbox,” ever to be presented to Indianapolis theatregoers is included in the final presentation of the summer season by Theatre In The Woods. “The Sandbox” is one of five oneact plays to be presented from the works of Tennessee Williams, William Inge and William Saroyan. “The Sandbox” and four additional one-act plays are being directed by Jackie Blumenthal, former Encore Award winner. “Plays For A Summer Evening” will be presented at Theatre In The Woods, 6701 N. Tri Delt Benefit The Indianapolis Delta Delta Delta Alumnae is sponsoring one evening of an Avondale Playhouse production, “Calculated Risk,” Tuesday, August 20, 8:30 p.m. John Payne will star in the presentation. The performance benefits from the evening go into a scholarship fund of the National Tri Delta organization. This fund benefits college girls over the United States regardless of their college social affiliation. Recipients of awards from the National Philanthropy of Tri Delta are chosen at the various colleges by faculty committees. SCHOOL NEWS Physical examinations for football will be held in the locker room area of the high school on 14th Street at 1:00 pm. on Wednesday, August 7, and at 8:00 pan. on Friday, August 9. Pre-school enrollment for junior and senior high school students in grades 7 through 12, who expect to attend Speedway Public Schools for the first time, will be held during the week of August 5. Students who attended Speedway Schools last year and those new to Speedway Public Schools who have already arranged for their enrollment at Junior and Senior High School Offices will not need to report Office hours at 5151 West 14th Street are 8:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 4:00. The High School Office will be closed during the week of August 12 in order to move to the new building. Students who attended Speedway Schools last year, and will be in grades 7 or 8, may pick up their daily schedule sheets during the week of August 19. Students who enrolled last spring for grades 9 through 13 may expect a notice of their schedule by mail the latter part of August. All elementary pupils, grades K-6, in Speedway Schools will be assigned to the same schools as last year. All school assignments are listed below.
