The Price Of Public Apathy Never underestimate the power of a retreating enemy in this case tuberculosis. Drugs now exist to cure—and someday completely to conquer —this disease. But as the death rate decreases, carelessness increases. The result is that today tuberculosis is unnecessarily winning many small battles because of public apathy and unconcern. A recent study of tuberculosis patients in Baltimore, Md., for instance, has revealed unnecessary delays of from two months to as long as two years in diagnosing active tuberculosis of the lung. Of 52 patients studied, the diagnosis of tuberculosis was made quickly in 23 cases. But with 29 patients, or 56 percent, there was an unnecessary delay in recognizing the disease. Dental Health In general, if you eat the kind of diet recommended for general health, you’ll be getting the essentials for dental health. During the year the teeth are being formed (from about 5 months before birth to the age of 8 years), an adequate supply of calcium and phosphorus is needed for hardening of the tooth structure. Once the teeth are fully formed and calcified, the enamel does not need any more calcium and cannot absorb any. The gums and the bones of the jaws must have the same nourishment throughout life as the other tissues of the body.
