Atkins To Head S.A.M. Harvey B. Atkins, 7102 Carlsen Avenue, has been elected President of the Indianapolis Chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Management. Atkins previously served as Executive Vice President. S.A.M. is the nationally recognized professional society of management personnel. Mr. Atkins is Assistant Cashier and Personnel Director of the Merchants National Bank and Trust Company. Previous to his appointed position at Merchants he served in the U. S. Marine Corps for twenty-four years attaining the rank of Colonel. Harvey has been active in other civic affairs. He is chairman of the Official Board at the Chapel Hill Methodist Church and a member of the Indianapolis Personnel Association. Speedway Jaycee’s “Safe Driving Road-E-B” Winners Are Announced lb
Tuesday, June 4, despite the fowl weather, the Jaycee’s conducted their safe Driving Road-E-O at the Plant 3 parking lot of Allison Division of General Motors. Allison’s furnished the contestants’ cars and also the guard. The contestant’s had all taken a written test similar to that given when obtaining a regular driving license at school before the actual manual test. Backing into a tight parking area within 6 inches of the curb, weaving around barrels and flags in the obstacle course and driving down a narrow path proving that they
Speedway Park Program The Park Program opened officially June 10. The supervised program will run from June 10 to July 26. Several children came early, full of vim, vigor and vitality, ready to begin an active new year in the park. We have quite a few activities planned for both parks this year, such as tournaments in Chess, Checkers, Chinese Checkers and croquet. These tournaments will be played by the individuals that are present on the days of the tournament. There will be no preregistration. Our little Peanut Leaguers have started and so have our Junior Basketball players. Any late comers who are interested in either one of these programs, but have not yet signed up, are welcome to sign up in the pars in which they play. The Junior High Basketball program is open to any Speedway boy who will be in grade 7-8 or 9 next year. The Peanut league is for Speedway boys 6-7-8 who are not members of another little league baseball team. Speedway Bridge Club June 26th will be the last game until September 4th. 1. Teen Hop At St. Andrew's This Friday Night The Senior High Luther League of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church again invites the teen agers of this area to a “School’s Out” Hop this Friday evening, June 14, at the church, from 8-11 p.m. Disc jockey Bill Baker of WIBC will be spinning the records. Refreshments will be served at eost. Free tickets may be obtained from senior high youth of St. Andrews, or from Speedway area church youth groups. Admission will be by ticket only. St. Andrew’s is located at the east entrance of the Speedway Shopping Center. Speedway DeMolay Installation Mike Hackett will be installed as Master Councilor, Speedway Chapter Order of DeMolay on Saturday, June 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Speedway Masonic Temple. Mike is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Hackett, 1880 N. Norfolk Street. Ground was broken Sunday, June 9, for a $65,000 Youth Unit at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Speedway. Building Committee Chairman John Quinn, 1744 Norfolk Street, together wilth Pastor Phillip Bigelow, 6030 Hollister Drive, took the first spades of earth in the service held at 10:30 a.m. Members of the congregation joined in the ceremonial digging. Architects for this third unit of a six unit master plan in contemporary campus style are members of the firm of James, Associates. Sheppard Construction Company are the builders, with financing being handled through First Bank and Trust Company. Starting time is 1:00 p.m. All contestants and their crews are urged to be at the Speedway shopping center early. Contestants for the Queen contest must also be at the shopping center by 1:00 pan. Clarification of ISHAA competition rules, now allows any westside youngsters 12-15 to enter these events and tonight, Thursday has been set aside for additional time for qualifications. This allows Ben Davis and Washington students the opportunity to enter along with the Speedway residents. The “Hot Dog” dinner for celebration of the winners will take place at the Speedway park at 6:30 p.m. and all participants, relief drivers, mechanics and other interested persons are invited. classes, other youth activities, and a youth center including outdoor patio. St. Andrew’s relocated to its present site at 5700 Crawfordsville Road in 1960. Also participating in the ceremonies were members of the junior and senior Luther Leagues of the congregation and their advisors, Mr. and Mrs. William Ellitt, 6797 West 14th St., Mr. and Mrs. James Davis, 4909 Baxter Drive, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stewart, 5360 Carltonway Drive. Construction is expected to take four months so the facilities will be available for the beginning of the fall program. St. Andrew’s was the site of the organizing convention of the Luther League of the new Indiana-Kentucky Synod last fall.
MIKKELSEN-RUFFATTO Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Mikkelsen formerly of Speedway wish to announce the marriage of their daughter Donna Caroline to John B. Ruffatto of Washington, D. C. The marriage took place June 8, 1963 in the Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church at Suitland, Maryland. Mrs. Ruffatto is the granddaughter of the late C. M. Mikkelsen of Speedway who was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church. Mr. and Mrs. Ruffatto are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Rhyan of 1686 Presto before continuing their wedding trip to Butte, Montana. Mrs. Ruffatto attended Ball State College and Mr. Ruffatto the Montana School of Mines and George Washington College at Washington, D. C. They will be at home at 3719 Donnell Drive, Apt. 204, Washington, D. C. after July Ist. Waltman Standard Service Robert E. Waltman, is the new owner of the Standard Service Station located at 5841 Crawfordsville Road. Mr. Waltman formerly owned a service station located at 16th and Mount. He has been a resident of Speedway for 14 years. The station will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and will feature complete car care.

Free Checking Service For Senior Citizens A brand new free service for senior citizens, 65 or older, has just been inaugurated by First Bank and Trust Company. This is a free checking account service. Instead of making the usual nominal charge per check or requiring a minimum balance, First Bank and Trust will handle the entire account without charge and regardless of the number of checks issued. All an applicant need do is to offer some proof of age such as a driver’s license, birth certificate or other document to establish age. First Bank and Trust believes this offer will interest many senior citizens and will also acquaint them with numerous other bank services available.
