Health Rackets The machine was an electronic marvel, its manipulators assured their wideeyed dupes. And a huge boon to the ailing. Why, all you had to do was send in a blood sample and the gadget would make a diagnosis, duly reporting whether your earache sifnified gout, cancer, or cowpox. There was one small hitch.

When government inspectors sent a couple of samples to the midwest “laboratory” where it held sway, it turned out the machine couldn’t even tell the difference between blood and colored water, let alone figure out what was in them! Electronic health-aid fakery has grown into big business since technology became the going thing. Recently Food and Drug Administration agents raided a phoney health institute in Washington, D. C. They found the gifted “therapists” operating an impressive dingbat into which they fed answers to questionnaires filled out by patients. The machine batted back a “diagnosis” of the patient’s disorders, whether he had any or not. Health rackets are an old story. The Food and Drug Administration estimates that a hot billion a year is paid out to fakers offering relief from such diseases as asthma, cancer, arthritis, and heart ailments. Standard medical treatment may look old-fashioned in this day of scientific wonders, but there isn’t any substitute for it. Your doctor is the one best qualified to advise you on any new development in this field. He is also, now as always, the one best qualified to treat your ills. For The Man Behind The Mike Put a bowl of crisp salad greens glistening with Bacon French Dressing in front of a man and watch it disappear. Then you’ll know that whoever said . . . men don’t care for salads ... is wrong as wrong can be. Of course, the greens must be fresh and crisp ... and the dressing must be good. A trick to remember in handling greens for the salad is to wash and drain them well . . . so well that they’re dry. Then place the greens in a plastic bag. Press out all the air that you can, close the bag tightly, and put in the refrigerator. This can be done

ahead of time. The greens can even be torn into bite sized pieces, too, so at dinner time all you need to do is add the dressing. The Bacon French Dressing I mentioned is a favorite of mine and you might like to try it out on your man. Combine in a jar or bottle a cup of salad oil and a third cup of vinegar. Season with a teaspoon salt, a dash of pepper, one-fourth teaspoon paprika, a tablespoon of sugar, and a clove of garlic cut in half. Cover and shake well. Then chill. Just before serving, remove the garlic and add about 6 slices of bacon with a sweet smoke taste that have been crisply fried and crumbled. The bacon gives this dressing real character. It lends texture interest and, above all, a wonderful flavor.
