Should You Do It Yourself? A “do-it-yourself” project isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be . . . just ask any husband . . . and selling a home yourself can be in the same category. You might be fortunate enough to find the right buyer immediately, but you can very well price your home too low or too high, show it to a lot of people who really aren’t interested, miss a buyer because he doesn’t know how to get financing, and so on. Let us discuss the sale of your home with you, without obligation. We’re sure you will find our services well worth the commission involved. Anyway, it will cost you nothing to find out. Call us anytime. OFFICE HOURS Monday thru Thursday 9-5 Friday 9-8 Saturday 9-12 CH. 1-6313. Ext. 67 or 68
TOWN TOPICS (Continued from Page 1) pavement surface on highways, but on urban streets cannot plow closer than two to three inches to the pavement because of manhole covers, sharp changes in grades at intersections and so forth. The two to three inch depth of snow which cannot be plowed, must be removed with salt or a mixture of salt and calcium chloride. This method is entirely dependent upon temperature. From freezing to about 25°F., straight salt can be used to melt

the ice and snow by lowering the melting point of the snow-salt mixture. In practice, the Town uses a mixture of salt and calcium chloride to hasten the melting from 25 degrees F. to 0 degrees F. the salt must be mixed with varying proportions of calcium chloride to melt the snow; when the temperature approaches 0 degrees F., 100% calcium-chlor-ide is used. When the temperature drops below 10 degrees F. to 15 degrees F., the sun must’ be shining to start thawing, whereas above this temperature, the action of traffic

will start the thawing. When the temperature drops below O°F., very little thawing takes place. However, we still apply salt and calcium. Chloride at temperatures lower than O’F. to keep the snow “mealy” and prevent it from packing into ice, so that when the temperature raises, the melting will take place more rapidly. Now here are some ways in which the motorist can help themselves and us, too.
Give the snow removal and salting equipment the right-of-way, as much as you can consistent with traffic safety. This gives us a chance to get around Town more quickly, especially in the salting phase, so that we can prevent the snow from packing. Keep your cars off the street as much as possible during plowing operations. If you can’t get your car off the street, move it after the plow has passed by and the operator will plow the unplowed space during clean-up operations. When sidewalks are against the curb, snow must be wind-rowed in the street. When this has been done, and thawing has started, do not park in front of a cut inlet. This will give us a chance to clear a path to the inlet so that melting water can run off the street. In addition to helping us to help you, there are certain little tricks to winter driving that a motorist can employ to help himself and other motorists. First of all, be sure your car engine has been warmed up enough so that it does not require choking before driving out onto the street. This will prevent bucking and stalling in traffic and allow you to pull away from slick spots at lower engine speed so that your wheels will not spin. Second, if your tires are bald
and slick, use -tire chains. You can’t reasonably expect your car to move with any facility when your tires have little or no treads. Preferably, use snow tires in the winter time, then it will not be necessary to continually apply and remove tire chains as the pavements vary between snowclogged and clear conditions. Third, when starting out on a slick spot on a grade, if your tires skin at engine idle speed, shift to second gear for a starting gear. If you drive a car with an automatic transmission, use as light a foot on the throttle as’you can. If your wheels start to spin after you have started to move, ease off

on the throttle and start from idle speed again using the car’s forward momentum as much as possible. .Fourth, do not apply the brakes or the throttle too quickly or let up too sharply on the throttle, or turn the steering wheel too quickly. Doing so will cause your car to skid. Fifth, do anticipate the necessity of stopping as far ahead as possible. Assume that every intersection is icy and be prepared to stop before entering it. Sixth, When you come to an intersection when the light is green and traffic on the other side of the intersection is stalled, do

not drive into the intersection and block it. Stay out of the intersection so that cross-traffic can drive through when the light changes in it’s favor. Seventh: When you know that driving conditions are going to be hazardous,, start early so that you will not be late to your destination. Incidentally, the yellow stains you see, in the snow around Town are caused by a corrossion-inhibi-tor that we mix in with the salt to keep your car from rusting and due to the action of the salt and water. Another type that we use is colorless and can’t be seen. E. Kridler, Town Engineer
