TOWN TOPICS Tax information for 1963 is still based on estimates. We note with some interest that the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce and the Indiana Taxpayers Association believe most rates as estimated will be reduced due to an expected increase in property valuation. It is interesting to note that Speedway’s overall estimated rate of $7.0691 compares favorably with Indianapolis’ $11.1841; Beech Grove’s $9.6012 and Lawrence’s $9.5859. The reason Speedway’s overall rate is considerably lower than its two sister cities, Beech Grove and Lawrence is because of lower city rate and a much higher property valuation, thanks to our Industrial and Commercial developments. Beech Grove valuation is $13,134,260; Lawrence $12,116,960 and Speedway $26,767,040. If Speedway had to operate the City Government on Beech Grove’s valuation the civil town tax would be $2.74 as against the present estimated $1,345. If Speedway with the present valuation, could operate on Beech Groves amount necessary tc raise, $271,767.00 as against Speedway’s $360,475.00, the Speedway rate would drop to sl.Ol. It is plain to see that Speedway taxes would double if it were not for Industrial Plants and commercial establishments, so make every effort to buy merchandise made and sold in Speedway. You’ll be doing yourself a favor. There should be more definite information shortly on tax rates. The Street crew is busy painting cross walks at street intersections and hope to be completed before school starts. The Police Department is accepting applications for school patrolmen (men or women). Did you hear about the sad little shoe—His mother was a Sneaker and his father was a Loafer.
