Assignment of Pupils to Elementary Schools for the 1962-63 School Year Each year several problems are' encountered by school officials in trying to determine a fair assignment of elementary pupils to the elementary schools. It is important that classes be no larger than necessary for the best results. Therefore, each year boundaries must be set to equalize as nearly as possible the enrollment in the six to seven sections of each grade. An attempt is made to permit pupils to continue at the elementary school which they attended in the first grade, but occasionally it is necessary, because of changes in school population or unusual growth of some part of the town, to assign pupils to a different school. All pupils in grades kindergarten through six north of Crawfordsville Road will be assigned (Continued on Page 3)

TOWN TOPICS The budget estimate for 1962 is considerably higher than the 1962 estimate was. This does not mean that town tax rates will be proportionally higher. If property valuation is substantially increased it will help to offset the increase. The estimate for 1962 is $568,194 as against 1962 estimate of $480,041. The county auditor has not been able to furnish correct figures on valuation or the amount of taxes to be collected for 1962. Until these figures are available, budget work is at a stand still. The town is requesting the Public Service Commission to cause the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to install flasher signals at the Lyndhurst Dr. crossing. Garbage and trash pick-up service is operating under a temporary contractor. Bids on a new contract will be opened August 13. The Speedway American Legion Post has presented the police department with a check for SSO to pin-chase ammunition. Thanks boys, for this and the many other kind remembrances. Your town officials have recently made a study of the street lighting system throughout the town. Several new lights will be installed yet this year. Several more in 1963.
A new bridge across Dry Run Creek is in the making for 1963. This will make Auburn Street a through street from U. S. 136 to 25th Street. The firemen expect to move into their new building in two or three weeks. Mr. James A. Hardin has been re-appointed to the Board of School Trustees for a three year term. Plans are under way to introduce fluoride into the public water supply. Some want it, others don’t. , Our thanks to the people who were so nice about cutting the weeds on vacant lots around town. With the exception of one owner, everyone made an honest effort. Congratulation to St. Christopher’s on the improvement to the parking lot. “Have patience and the mulberry leaf will become satin.” Spanish Proverb. J. W. Baxter
