TB On The Air A 20-year-old electrician aboard a U.S. Navy ship came down with active tuberculosis. Within 18 months, 61 of his shipmates had picked up his infection, and 30 of these were hospitalized. That ship had an epidemic of TB on its hands. As might be expected, most of the infected seamen had their berths in that section of the ship where the first active case had bunked. But the next largest number was bunked in an adjoining section, which was not partitioned off. Those TB germs had travelled quite a way. It is usual for the TB germs to travel from one person to another in droplets from the infected person’s mouth or nose. But the TB germ can also live for a long time on ordinary dust and can rise whenever the dust is stirred up. Experiments with guinea pigs have pointed to much the same conclusion. Confined spaces not exposed to sunlight are ideal for keeping the TB germ alive. An adult with untreated active TB does not have to be in close contact with others in the same house to pass on his disease. Just the fact that he is in the house means that anyone living there is in danger of infection. If we are ever going to wipe out tuberculosis, every person with active TB must be found and treated adequately until he is no longer infectious. It’s a tremendous job, because 250,000 people have active disease, and an estimated 100,000 of them probably don’t know it. Keep your family safe from TB. Get a TB check-up . . . tuberculin test or chest X-ray . . . for everyone in the house. Next week’s chest X-ray schedule, arranged by the Marion County Tuberculosis Association in cooperation with state and local health departments follows. These X-rays are free of charge. All adults, 18 years and older, are urged to take advantage of of this important health service.
