NEA Convention Robert H. Wyatt, executive secretary of the Indiana State Teachers Association, is the new president-elect of the National Education Association. Elected at the 100th NEA convention in Denver July 6, he is the fourth Hoosier to hold the national office. Others were James H. Smart in 1881; Henry Lester Smith in 1935, and Donald DuShane in 1941. Considered one of the ablest lobbyists for education in the country, Wyatt has represented teachers of Indiana at every session of the state legislature since 1938. He will step into the NEA presidency at the July, 1963, convention in Detroit. Hundreds of Indiana educators attended the week-long sessions in mile-high Denver and backed their candidate in a whirlwind campaign. Wyatt defeated opponents from Utah, Colorado, and Washington. Mew Telephone Central Office Indiana Bell Telephone Company announced today it will build a new telephone central office at 2141 Mitthoffer Road to help expand telephone facilities on the northeast side. C. R. Barkman, Indianapolis division manager for the company, said Indiana Bell would invest $2,000,000 in the program. The new office is scheduled to

begin service in the fall of 1963. In announcing the program, Barkman disclosed that F. A. Wilhelm Construction Company, Inc., of Indianapolis, has been awarded the general contract for construction of the new building. Wilhelm’s bid was low among a total of six submitted, Barkman said. Construction is slated to get under way immediately. The structure is scheduled to be ready for the start of equipment installation by March 15, 1963. Barkman said the building will

be a one-story structure, faced with brick-veneer. In addition to providing space for tons of telephone switching, transmission and power equipment, it will serve as an Indiana Bell garage and service center on the northeast side. Plans for the new building were drawn by Alden Meranda and Associates, Indianapolis architects. “Primarily, addition of these new facilities will mean more and better telephone service in the area now served by our Liberty and FLeetwood offices in Indianapolis and the TWinbrook office in Cumberland,” Barkman pointed out. “But by adding central office equipment and outside lines to the overall metropolitan telephone system, it will contribute to better service for all the half-million telephone users in and around Indianapolis.” Barkman said no telephone prefix has been assigned as yet for the area to be served by the new office.
