AEC Negotiating Contract With Allison The Atomic Energy Commission is negotiating a contract with the Allison Division of General Motors Corporation, Indianapolis, Indiana, and the United Nuclear Corporation, White Plains, New York, for the development of a prototype military compact reactor power plan. Under the contract the Allison Division will be the prime contractor for the plant. United Nuclear will serve as nuclear associate for the project. The objective of the project is the design, construction and operation of an extremely mobile lightweight compact power plant capable for generating 3,000 kw of electricity. The plant will have a high temperature, liquid metal cooled reactor coupled to a power conversion system. The design will incorporate compactness, mobility and long plant life characteristics compatible with military field equipment and is expected to reduce the burden which the shipment and storage of petroleum imposes on combat forces. In addition, the MCR type plant may have an important application as an electric power source in civil defense and disaster relief missions. Preliminary studies to select the most promising approach, including overall systems analysis, experimental and conceptual design, were completed by the companies in 1961. A joint proposal of the two companies to perform these studies was selected from among several submitted. The evaluation of the proposal

was on the basis of company capability to carry out the entire project. The work related to the compact reactor system was initiated in response to a Department of Defense requirement and is being pursued as a consequence of a recent affirmation of that requirement. The development effort will be conducted as a joint program of the Commission and the United States Army Corps of Engineers and is part of the Commission’s continuing effort to develop nuclear power technology for military uses.
