from the activities usually associated with such devices. No soaring U-2 plane, the Hoosier “eye” is a plodding Piper Cub. Oblivious to things military or meteorological, its attention centers on unexciting rows of yellow stakes stitched across the landscape. No “mystery” craft, the aerial newcomer advertises its identity and its mission in huge red letters emblazoned across its wing. That message reads, “INDIANA BELL CABLE PATROL” —and telephone company officials agree the more Hoosiers know about the “eye’s” daily mission, the more effective its performance will be. The plane’s mission is simply this: 1. a “weather eye” on some 1,700 miles of underground telephone cables whose routes are marked by the yellow stakes. 2. Help construction crews and other work details to complete their jobs near telephone cable routes without fouling communications equipment. 3. Boost Indiana Bell’s effort to impress upon Hoosiers that (a) long distance cables are buried in virtually all parts of the state and (b) he who breaks one tosses a serious crimp into the communications system.

Carrying out the job will be * full-time assignment during nine months of the year. The plane will fly almost daily patrols from mid-March through mid-Decem-ber. It will make its aerial rounds during one week in January and one week in February. Routinely, the pilot of the Indiana Bell plane will sail along telephone cable routes at an altitude of about 300 feet. As he spots construction work in progress near a cable, he will follow one of several courses of helpful action. In most cases, he’ll note the location and—when he makes his next landing—telephone the information to Indiana Bell headquarters in Indianapolis. The telephone company then will follow up by dispatching a representative to the scene to assist the work crew in avoiding any cables buried in their area. Should it appear likely that damage to telephone cables might be imminent, the pilot may circle the site and drop a small cardboard box. The carton will contain a message urging the crew to make a quick check of telephone cable locations with Indiana Bell before proceeding further with its work. Are these trips necessary? Is the problem important and can the flying “eye” really help solve it? “Major cables owned by our company and by the Long Lines Department of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company are being broken and damaged in Indiana on an average of 15 times a year,” explained Indiana Bell President Roy C. Echols. “Although the repercussions from some of these accidents are more serious than others, all cause interruptions in telephone service and other forms of communication. This is annoying and costly to our customers and to us. The task of locating and repairing cable breaks is extremely expensive to Indiana Bell and to Long Lines and is disruptive to our work schedules.” Total annual cost of cable breaks in recent years has soared into “many thousands of dollars, just for Indiana Bell alone,” Echols pointed out.
