Krannert Y.M.C. A. Day Camp Day Camp is now in progress at the Krannert Family YMCA, 605 South High School Road. The first period opened Monday, June 18. There will be five periods during the summer. Second period, June 25-29; third period, July 9-13; fourth period, July 1620; fifth period, July 23-27. While at day camp, the campers enjoy boating, handicraft, singing, cookouts, archery, nature study, overnight camping, swimming, hikes and many other camp activities. Campers will also visit the airport and children’s museum. On the final day of each period, the campers stay overnight. Singing, campfire, cookout, and awards will feature the overnight stay. Don Lohmann, executive of the Y, is the staff member responsible for camp. Katie Lineberry is camp director, while Margaret Horner, Connie Clark, and Jim Lee are counselors. Friendship Seven Reading Club Approximately 275 boys and girls have enrolled in the Summer Recreational Reading Program at the ‘High School Library. This year the theme is: “Friendship Seven Reading Club.” Those who join and read at least fifteen books on their own level and not previously read by them will receive a certificate during the week of July 23 -27 indicating their accomplishment. The Town Board is ordering the cutting and removal of weeds. This is being accomplished by direct mail to the property owner just as quickly as the owner can be located through the assessor’s office. Any one who owns property on which weeds are growing, please cut them now and remove them; otherwise the town will cut and remove them and the cost will be added to your taxes. Due to the difference in lot sizes there is no set price where the town performs this service; however, a minimum of fifty (SSO) dollar per lot is the usual charge.

Captain Scott Bray. Dies In The East Memorial services for Captain W. Scott Bray, 49, former Indianapolis resident, were held at 3 p.m. yesterday at The Church of the Messiah, in Woods Hole, Mass. He died last Saturday morning in the hospital at Pocasset, Mass. Born in Indianapolis, Mr. Bray attended grade school here and Technical High School. He was former master of the Atlantis, the largest research vessel of The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, but more recently was engaged in special research at the Institute in Woods Hole. He served in World War II and several years thereafter as a Chief Mate in the Merchant Marine. Previous to that he was in the United States Navy for four years. His wife, tfie former Mary Hargrove, is also a former Indianapolis resident. Survivors are a son, Stephen, Woods Hole; a daughter, Bonnie Flint, Providence, R. 1.; his mother, Mrs. Nora Bray; two sisters, Mrs. Lowell Grisso and Mrs. Eugene Brown, all of Indianapolis, and a grandson.

The group will meet at 10:00 a.m. on the east side of the State House and proceed via Roads 136 and 234 to the entrance inside the park, and have a cold lunch. Following the afternoon’s hiking an evening cookout will be held. Part of the group will be camping out on Saturday evening, with Bill McKitrick in charge of this section. Mardis M. Goers Leaves For U.S. Naval Academy Mardis M. Coers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy J. Coers, Jr., 4966 W. 13th Street, left Sunday to begin his first year at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. He was appointed to the academy by Senator R. Vance Hartke. He is a graduate of Speedway High School, where he was a varsity letter winner in both football and basketball, was staff member of The Speedette, the Varsity Club and participated in the Junior Play. . PERSONALS Ruth Ellen Blackwell, nine-year-old daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Donald S. Blackwell of 2121 Allison Ave., Speedway, won first prize in the Talent Show and Contest, which was held on Tuesday night, June 19, as part of the entertainment of the Pioneer Festival at Spencer, Indiana. The first prize was $15.00 in cash. She won by doing a tap dance.
Mr. Harold Ruschaupt, 1720 N. Lynhurst Dr., was honored at the Officer’s Club for his 40 years at the Eli Lilly Co. Tuesday night, June 20. Dr. R. Edward Dodge, Jr., of Speedway City, awarded his M.D. degree by Indiana University on June 4, will serve his year of internship on the medical staff of the Los Angeles County Hospital at Los Angeles, Calif., it was announced today by Dean John D. VanNuys of the I.U. School of Medicine, in a report on the 136member 1962 graduating class. Dr. Dodge and his classmates are taking the Indiana licensing examinations at the medical school June 20-23 and plan their first official class reunion in May, 1967. Sixteen from Marion County are among 44 students attending the first two-week session of the 16th annual High School Journalism Institute, June 24-July 7, at Indiana University. Titled “News Conference,” the session is a stimulating workshop on communications for select high school students. The participants will hear lectures from veteran newsman Al Spiers, editorial director of Nixon Newspapers, Michigan City, as well as I.U. faculty members and high school teachers. The Speedway student is Richard Canada, 1827 N. Lynhurst Drive. Speedway resident Charles A. Griffith, Civil Service employee of the Indianapolis Air Force Contract Management District, received formal recognition and high praise for completion of more than 22 years of Federal Service. Mr. Griffith plans to do some traveling and play much golf.

Mabel L. Daily Recital Mabel L. Daily will present her vocal, piano and organ students in recital June 29, 7:30 p.m. at the Wilking Auditorium. Public invited. PARK NEWS Here are the first results of our Peanut league at the three parks. Main Park: Blue Flashes 14, Pirates 12 and Giants beat the Cardinals 18 to 15. On Friday at Main Park the Blue Flashes beat the Cardinals 15 to 14 and the Giants outhit the Pirates to win 6 to 5. At 22nd Street on Thursday the Yankees slipped by the Hornets 13 to 10. Friday afternoon the Yankees edged the Redlegs 18 to 17. All the teams at Meadowood have now won one game and lost one. Results are: Tuesday Dodgers 7, Yankees 4; Eagles 12, Braves 6. On Thursday Yankees 15, Eagles 10, and the Braves 12, the Dodgers 10.
The Junior Horseshoe tournament will be held the next week. Registration will close on Monday, July 2. This tournament is open for all Speedway residents between the ages of 12 to 20. We have some fine prizes and trophies, so sign up now. Our annual Chess Tournament will be held July 2-6 at both parks with the playoffs between the winners of the two parks. The little people enjoyed the story hour on Wednesday and our storytellers did a real fine job. There will be no supervision on July 4th but the park facilities will be here for your picnic pleasure. The program is now in full swing. New games have been added at both the parks and all would indicate that the children are having a good time. Our tennis clinic and tournament is scheduled to run from the 16th of July to the 27th. Don Nester, a regular at the Speedway Parks for a number of years, will be director of the clinic. There is no charge so sign up now to take part in the clinic and the tournament. Trophies will be awarded. See you at the parks.

“Safe Boating” WeekJnlyl-7 The week of July 1 through 7 has been designated as National Safe Boating Week. The Red Cross, in cooperation with boating associations, has available a decal to be placed on all boats giving safe boating rules. These rules are as follows: Remain with your craft in case of capsizing.
Approved life jackets should be available for all occupants. Children should wear them at all times. Don’t overload the craft. Keep weight low. Know the weather conditions. Consider the safety of others; stay away from all swimming and fishing areas; watch your wake. Know the rules of the road. Carry the necessary equipment Learn how to swim.
