John Nice Receives Post Office Appointment John J. Nice, 5303 W. 11th Street, has been appointed acting postmaster of Indianapolis by Sen. Vance Hartke (D. Ind.). Nice had been assistant superintendent of mails after 11 years as superintendent of the Speedway Post Office Branch.

"June Bug Hop" To Be Held June 15th The Luther League of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 5700 Crawfordsville Road, Speedway, is sponsoring a June Bug Hop on Friday, June 15, 1962. D. J. Bill Baker of WIBC will be on hand to spin the latest records from 8-11 p.m. With the tension and anxiety of final exams, term papers, and burning the midnight oil a thing of the past by June 15, St. Andrew’s high school youth thought the young people of this community would enjoy an evening of wholesome fun with “Bouncin’ Bill” in air conditioned comfort. Free tickets may be secured from Leaguers or from the pastors of Speedway area churches. School dress is advised; no shorts or jeans will be permitted. Refreshments will be served at cost. FRIENDSHIP SEVEN READING CLUB On June 18 registration will begin for the summer recreational reading project at the school library. This year the theme is: “Friendship Seven Reading Club. For six weeks participants will be reading books new to them on their own reading level and will report briefly on each book as it is returned. When fifteen books have been read the club member will be eligible to receive a reading certificate to be issued during the last week of the program July 23-27.. Last year 305 boys and girls joined the club and 175 received reading certificates. Membership in the club is open to all readers—from first grade on through senior high school. Books will be available in the libary for all reading levels. REMEMBER: Registration during week of June 18-22. Be there!

When the Angelus bell rang at 6 o’clock at St. Christopher Church yesterday morning, June 6th, for morning devotion, it also announced the beginning of the day which marked the 40th anniversary of their beloved pastor’s ordination as a priest. The Rev. Leo A. Lindemann, pastor since September 1936, said a high Mass at 8 o’clock that morning, but the solemn high Mass for the occasion will be said on Sunday morning, June 10th. SIX HUNDRED AT METHODIST CONFERENCE The 111th annual session of the Northwest Indiana Annual Conference of the Methodist Church opened at West Lafayette, Indian, June 6, bringing together more than 600 lay and ministerial delegates. Meetings are scheduled through June 10th in the Loeb Playhouse on the Purdue University Campus. Bishop Richard C. Raines, Resident Bishop of the Indiana Area of the Methodist Church, is presiding over the four-day conference, the annual legislative and business session for nearly 300 Methodist Churches in Northwest Indiana. Rev. Howard E. Wright and Rev. R. Richmond Blake, pastors of the Speedway Methodist Church, and Mr. Floyd F. Farley and Mr. Cletis E. Jenkins, Speedway Methodist Church’s Lay Delegates to the Annual Conference, are attending. The reading of appointments, assigning pastors to their churches for the new church year, which began June Ist, will be the closing item of business on Sunday afternoon.

church last night, the evening of his anniversary. Born on October 27, 1897 in Troy, Indiana and baptized two days later as Leo August Lindemann by Rev. Wm. Wack of St. Pius church, he grew up in Troy, attending Catholic grade schools there and the St. Paul school at Tell City. In September 1911, at the age of 13, he entered high school at St. Meinard from the 7th grade, where he completed four years of high sehool and one year of college. Special Program The women of St. John’s Episcopal Church, 5625 West 30th St. will present a commentary form of the Solemnization of Holy Matrimony on Monday, June 11th at 8:00 p.m. at the church. Parishoners of the church will portray the parts of a wedding party and Fa. John L. Lowe will officiate the ceremony with Mrs. Vi (Richard) Holloway reading the commentary. Members of the wedding party will be: Mrs. Geo. Douglas, Bride; Mr. Geo. Douglas, giroom; Mrs. Max Siminick, matron of honor; Mrs. Lewis Berkeley, bridesmaid; ushers, Mr. Lewis Berkeley and Mr. Max Siminick. Best man will be Mr. Rich rd Holloway. Following the ceremony will be a Fashion Show of American Wedding Dress through the ages, dating from 1865 through 1960. The gowns will be worn by the owners and girls of the church. Rick Stanton will be the organist for the evening, playing for the wedding, style show and reception. Following the style show, a reception will climax the evening. There will be a picture gallery of weddings of parishoners in the entrance hall.
Miss River s Announce Wedding Attendants The selection of attendants for the wedding of Miss Mary Ellen Rivers to Michael L. Douglas June 16 in Holy Spirit Catholic Church has been announced. Mrs. Duane Gaddis will be her sister’s matron of honor and John Coddington, Cincinnati, will serve as best man for his brother. Bridesmaids will be Misses Pat Erwood, Linda Loman, Jo Ann Rumbaugh and Pamela Matthews. Ushers will be Ronnie Lambert, Duane Gaddis, Fred Staver and Kurt Walden. On behalf of the Speedway Shopping Center Merchants Association and Mr. Warren T. Atkinson (Developer of the Shopping Center) Parnelli Jones (center) is shown receiving SSOO in cash and over SSOO in merchandise certificates along with a plaque and the beautiful trophy with his name and winning speed engraved on it. The trophy is a perpetuating trophy that remains on display in the Speedway Museum to be awarded subsequent years to the new pole position winner along with the purse. Speedway merchant, Charlie Brockman, is shown making the award along with Mr. J. C. Agajanian, car owner, who was awarded a trophy plaque and we also accepted a plaque for chief mechanic John Poulesen who could not be present. Many of the west side customers at the Center were present for the presentation which was made at the peak of the Ist Birthday Celebration 3-day Event.
