WATER SAFETY The clarion call for physical fitness among Americans sounds loud, insistent and unceasing across the land these days. Our first reaction to the image of ourselves as the “soft Americans” was shocked incredulity. However reluctantly, the validity of that unflattering appraisal has been confirmed. For most of us, the pendingsummer affords a fortunate opportunity to mix fun and fitness. Water sports are highly rated body-building and enjoyable

physical activities for all ages. Yet, in spite of the tremendous popularity of water recreation, nearly 100 million Americans can’t swim. Drowning has become the nations fourth largest accidental killer, accounting for one in every 14 deaths by accident. Of the nearly 7,000 drownings predicted for the United States this year, the majority of them will be the result of carelessness. “Not knowing or ignoring a few safety rules accounts for most water tragedies" declared Mr. Elmer A. Binner, Associate General Secretary of the Indianapolis YMCA. As the YMCA launches its yearly campaign to reduce water accidents and drownings, it stresses some of the basic rules of water safety: learning to swim is the first step in any water activity —don’t depend on floating aids for support, use the “buddy” sys-

tern in swimming and diving, always swim in areas that are known to be safe—“No Swimming” signs mean just what they say. In boating, use common courtesy and common sense plus carrying necessary safety equipment with you at all times. Waterskiing, skin and scuba diving can be exciting and enjoyable but don’t be a do-it-yourself expert, these sports are for those trained and in good physical condition. To sum it up, Mr. Binner suggests, “To keep it fun you have to keep it safe. Show sense in swimming for a safe summer.” Indpls. Hiking Club The Indianapolis Hiking Club will hike in and around the YMCA Camp near Flat Rock on Sunday, June 3. The group will meet at 10 ajn. on the east side of the State House and proceed via Road 421 to St. Omer, where we will reassemble at 11:30 a.m. Each person is to bring food for a cold lunch and a supper cookout. EATING WELL Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, and get your vitamins from the food store rather than the drug counter! That’s one pitch you can believe. You don’t need expensive health food or vitamin pills to be well nourished. You can get all you need for pep and resistance to infection just from the food you eat, provided you have a balanced diet. Nutritionists say that a balanced diet is made up of the “fundamental four” food groups. You should eat some of each every day. 1. Milk and milk products—butter, cream, ice cream, cheese, for protein, vitamins, calcium and other minerals. 2. Meat, poultry, fish, eggs—for proteins, the building blocks of the body, minerals, and vitamins. You can also get some protein from peas, beans, and nuts, but the best protein comes from meats, poultry or fish. 3. Vegetables and fruits—green vegetables, yellow vegetables, fruits of all kinds, but especially citrus fruits, for vitamins and minerals. 4. Bread and cereals whole grain or enriched, for carbohyd-
