SUE TODD REPORTS February 20, 1962 Happy Birthday, Daddy, from Istanbul: My Dear Folks and Dick: We arrived here on the 20th of February by ship from Athens. The weather wasn’t the nicest nor the sea the calmest. We traveled the lowest class—below the waves and was it rough! Ever since we left Vienna we were destined for troubles, I believe. Our steward on ship was a nice grandfather type and the first evening he presented us with brand new clothes—skirts, sweaters, slips, etc. We didn’t have the slightest idea what he wanted because he only spoke Turkish! The chief purser came to our rescue and said that the steward wanted us to smuggle in these clothes and some liquor, too! As tourists we wouldn’t have to pay duty. Of course, we refused but it was some experience having some old man shoving clothes at us and not understanding one word. Another person approached us wanting us to carry across more liquor and even offered to give us one bottle. We did have one nice experience. We met some college boys on ship from Istanbul. They have been showing us the town. The city is certainly a fascinating town. It is quite filthy and poor. The streets are narrow and winding. There are a lot of old American cars. I have seen several 1948 Chevrolets and even rode in one used as a taxi. The Mosques are very impressive. By the way this is their type of birthday card. It is handmade. It’s a good thing it has no greeting. The Turkish language sounds like nothing to me. I knew the Greek alphabet and it meant a little something to me, but this is beyond me. I’m enclosing some photographs from Athens. Pictures explain why I haven’t written much and I’m sorry. We four hated to leave Athens, but Istanbul, has some good looking fellows, too! Ha! March 4, 1962 Home again in “Viennaville.” I am really not to excited about it, but I guess you are. I’m really sorry that I didn’t keep you very well informed on my so-called vacation. That first trip through Yugo. more or less shot our nerves and got us off to a bad start. Paddy and I both had colds to begin with and then our trek through the blizzard didn’t help them plus staying up all night in that rotten town—Damir Kapija. I’ll never forget that experience. I can’t understand why they were so unfriendly to Americans even if they are “neutral” Communists. Anyhow we shook our colds in Athens. At first it was a bit chilly there but by the end of the two weeks it was warm enough to run around without coats. I was really sorry we had to leave Athens and head for wet, cold Istanbul. But Istanbul was well worth seeing even if I did—hold on to your hats—catch the measles! You bet that they were the real thing. Two days before I broke out with them I felt really lousy and grouchy, I couldn’t figure out what the matter could be. Then those nasty little red spots made their grand appearance and Paddy diagnosed them. It had to be them because my eyes hurt from light and I had a fever but only one night. Thank goodness I’m fairly strong and healthy, if not, I would still be in Istanbul. I didn’t call a doctor because you can never be certain and what worried me most was that they wouldn’t let me out of the country. Our train left the night of the 28th and I wasn’t going to let the measles stop me. These countries are really touchy now since smallpox has been so prevalent. We had to show proof

of our vaccination in Yugo., Turkey, and Bulgaria. Where I got the measles, I’ll never know. So you see what_l mean about the so-called vacation. Paddy caught a rash on one small island we visited with our Greek friends. One Sunday we took a small sight seeing boat to a very scenic island not far from Athens, it was very picturesque. The people there were much more native in their dress than in Athens. We ate baby squid for dinner in an outside case by the harbor. Most

of the people made a living by fishing. The squid was fairly good. Pm glad it wasn’t octopus! They had octopus hanging over many of the restaurants doors, I couldn’t have taken that. Back to Paddy —she caught something like poison ivy, poor kid! She scratched most of the vacation, but now we are in good shape since we’ve returned here. We spent two days on Crete. We took a boat from Athens and it took a day to get there. The Maasdam looked like a luxury

liner next to this. Crete was a little more primitive than Athens. They had an open market for one whole block, meat and dead animals hung out in the open, and of course, my stomach couldn’t take this, therefore I ate very little while there. We visited an old palace ruins and several museums. In one museum we met some American Gl’s. The name of the town was Heraklion, outside there was a small airforce base. They took us on a tour around the town and took care of

our night life on Crete. It’s really great to be a single and twenty years old! One of the Turkish boys that we met, lived in Bursa, Turkey—a historical town in the interior of Asiatic Turkey. He insisted that we all come and visit the town but we just didn’t have time. It sounds as if we did nothing but socialize the whole month. But

really we did a lot of sightseeing, visited museums and churches. I was really fascinated by the Mosques in Istanbul. They were beautiful It was strange to see them sit around on the carpeted floors and pray. So entirely different from anything I had ever seen. We had to take off our shoes like everyone else, but we didn’t wash our feet in their small baths

outside afterwards! Not that they didn’t need it, but it is part of their belief. I felt like I was a long way from Western Europe here. Speaking of baths—we didn’t have too many on our trip. I had three the whole month. They were too expensive, but I took many sponge baths! The night (Continued on Page 8)
