SPEEDWAY STATE BANK FIRST TO REPORT ON CORRESPONDENT BOOKKEEPING OPERATION

Speedway State Bank has been performing the Demand Deposit Accounting for its correspondent, The First National Bank of Plainfield, since June 1, 1961. Since the operation started, First National Bank has been able to remodel its quarters and utilize all the floor space, previously devoted to bookkeeping. A new drive-up window and a new back entrance from a parking lot have been installed. Mr. William Terry, Vice President of First National Bank estimates the elimination of the Demand Deposit Accounting has sav. ed First National Bank direct costs in excess of $500.00 per month, in addition to supervisory costs. It has also permitted Fust National Bank to render better service through the better utilization of the floor space for customer access to the bank. Speedway State Bank receives all items in the evening. First National Bank has fine sorted the items, supplied any missing account numbers and prepared proof tapes for balancing of ledger sections. First National’s items are posted on electronic equipment just prior to the daily posting of Speedway items. All items are photographed; statements cut, if on a cycle date, and prepared for return to First National Bank that evening. Balance inquiries on First National Bank accounts are handled by telephone. All ledgers are retained at Speedway from Monday morning until Friday evening. Since First National Bank is open on Saturday and Speedway is not open, ledgers are sent Friday evening to First National Bank and returned to Speedway State Bank on Saturday afternoon. A bonded carrier is used to transport the items and ledgers between banks. After the Demand Deposit bookkeeping system had been used for two months, liability ledger posting and mortgage loan posting was also started for First National Bank. These items are transported at the same time as bookkeeping items and ledgers are retained at Speedway permanently. Trial balances are run by Speedway personnel and balanced to Plainfield’s controls. On the first, day of each month the ledgers are sent to Plainfield for a monthly trial balance and preparation of the report of new loans for the monthly Board of Directors meeting. First National Bank has been able to convert to more modern loan accounting forms and demand deposit forms without any expenditure for new equipment They are saving considerable money each month on direct costs and even more on indirect costs. Speedway State Bank has profited from the arrangement by better utilization of expensive bookkeeping equipment with only a small increase of both direct and indirect costs. By scheduling First National’s

cycle dates for statement transfer, trial balancing and service charge posting on different days than Speedway’s occur, we have been able to spread the work load over the week, instead of having high peak days and low volume days. The Correspondent Bookkeeping has been convenient and profitable for both banks. Speedway State Bank predicts there will be a rapid expansion into this field by may banks.
