BOY SCOUT NEWS (Continued from Page 1) wilderness areas of Indiana. Being mostly cross country, the trail goes over ridges and down valleys, following old stage coach roads, Indian trails and historic forest roads that were in use 150 years ago during the settlement of Southern Indiana. Starting at the Scout camping area of the Yellowwood State Forest on Yellowwood Lake, the 16 mile trail heads up hill to Jumbled Ridge, down Dubois Road, through Salt Creek, up Hickory Hill to an old pioneer cemetery. After crossing Highway 46, the trail passes a log cabin which was once a way-station on the old stage coach road. The hikers then head up Taylor Ridge, across Bowie Knife Knob, down a steep hill to the Pearl of the Woods (Lake Strahl). Then along Skinner

Creek, through Greenhorn Dip to a series of ridges up GRUNT and GROAN SLOPE to finish at the fire tower atop Weed Patch Hill in BROWN COUNTY STATE PARK. Tired? We were. You may wonder whence the name, 10 o’clock Line. In the days when Indiana was still a territory, it was necessary to negotiate frequently with the Indian tribes to secure new lands for the pioneer settlers of the area. William Henry Harrison, Territorial Governor, was very skilled in these talks with the Indians. He understood how they thought and reacted. In a month long series of councils with the Miami, Delaware and Potawatomi tribal chiefs in September, 1809, at Fort Wayne, the Governor gained 3 million acres of land to be bounded on the north by the 10 o’clock Line. The Line was the sort of boundary that the

Indians could understand and hence respect. It extends almost due Southwest from the junction of the Wabash River and Racoon Creek near Montezuma to a point near Seymour. The Line was established by the direction of the sun’s shadow at 10 o’clock on the morning of each September 30th. An excellent group of “grunt and groaners” these hikers. For some, it was their first hiking experience with the Boy Scouts. Good assistance from the older boys, acting as Group Leaders and the sportsmanship of the fathers who hiked the trail, combined to make a most successful hike for the group. All of the boys completed the Trail no dropouts. The hikers were: Kerry Blind, Phil Doll, Teddy Fidger, John Fuller, Mark Geyer, Jim Hansen, Mark Hinsley, Steve Hinsley,

Richard Hoerger. Darryl Hood, Lynn Hood, Ray Knapp, M. Lawhorn, Dave Link, Bruce Lot, Mike Moore, Nelson Nave, Doug Rosebrock, Steve Rosebrock, Tommy Smith, Craig Spence, Dick Stout, Chuck Thompson, Karl Wacker and Raymont Wing. The adult leaders were Mr. Wayne Blind, Bob Doll (Troop Committee Chairman) and Stan Hansen (Associate Post Advisor). Handling the transportation problem from the trail’s end back to camp were: Fred Hoerger (Post Advisor), Dick Schilling (Scoutmaster), Chris Schrock (West District Commissioner) and Bob Thompson (Troop Committeeman and former Scoutmaster.) You just can’t WALK BACK! Parent, if your son was one to complete this hike, you may well be proud of him. He has perserverance, stamina, is cooperative and behaves well in a group.
