SUE TODD REPORTS (Continued from Page 3) he gave us two marks until we had a chance to change some. I think Americans have a lot to learn from the Germans. The West Berliners were extremely friendly and I don’t think that only because Americans are defending them, I hear they are friendly to all foreigners. Not only do Americans have much to learn from them but the Viennese could take a few lessons, too. The Viennese are too aristocratic. If you aren’t an Austrian, it’s hard to be accepted by them. Just the exact opposite in West Berlin. They are more the normal middle class people. ' The city, West Berlin, is beautiful—sprawling suburbs, wide city streets, modern buildings everywhere. I felt right at home. But there were still some war remind-

ers—a few buildings in ruins that they haven’t rebuilt. Our first night we stayed in a dormitory for young travelers. The youth hostel closed it doors before we got there. The dorm was centrally heated and had showers—my first shower since I got off the ship! The youth hostel was cheaper than the dorm. The next three nights we stayed there. It was nice but it had only cold water and we had to turn the lights off at 10:00 p.m. Our first day we spent a few hours in East Berlin. There is only one place which foreigners can cross. That wall is unbelievable—it has barb wire fence on top and broken glass, and in many spots there is a tall cardboard fence behind the wall. This was put up so the East Berliners couldn’t wave across to their friends. Isn’t that about the low-

est and meanest thing? Well all right, they built a nasty wall and guard it heavily but to not allow them to wave is really going overboard. It really broke my heart. We were questioned and searched again. I had my diary along to mark down a few notes. Can you believe that they went through my diary! Of all nerve—my private little world! They must have thought it contained top secret notes. I hope they enjoyed it. East Berlin presented quite a contrast to West. They have rebuilt some buildings but there are many more that need it. There were fewer people on the streets and a handful of traffic. Soldiers and policemen were all over the place. They didn’t seem to be very popular with the people. We had changed one West German mark for four East marks at the train station on the West. At the border one can only get a one to one exchange. The East Germans are in desperate need of West marks. We bought some out-door baked waffles. Therefore, we boosted a little inflation. I’m for doing anything to hinder their progress. It’s terrible how they run and ruin their subjected population. Living conditions weren’t impossible but they fell way below those conditions in West Berlin. The next day we returned to the Eastern sector but on a bus tour. The tour had to change guides at the border and we got a young Communist guide. My sympathy was with him—really he was resigned and didn’t seem very happy at all. He did his job very nicely and told us a lot of propaganda, still I felt for him. We toured two hours on each side. I took a whole roll of film and I

hope it turns out. The wall, the guards and East Berlin as a whole made me very sad. One thing I’m all the way for and that is to defend West Berlin. If they took over the West, it would be a great loss to our side. It’s well worth keeping. Did you read about the Christmas trees along the wall? They are tall enough for East Berliners to see. Countries all over the world sent them to let the E. Berliners know they haven’t been forgotten. One picture I took was a snowman at one entrance built by the West German soldiers. While I was taking it, I could barely see on the other side a snowman built by the East German soldiers, they won’t be outdone. The tanks are no longer lined up along the wall. On the West side a whole vacant lot was filled with U. S. tanks all covered by canopy. We looked on the other side but we couldn’t see any. But Pm sure they were there. I could ramble on all day and night about Berlin. I’m just glad that I had an opportunity to see it. Even with all the soldiers and fortifications I can’t believe that a war will break out. December 27th—My first day of skiing—l’m cold and sore! But it’s really so much fun. I hope to perfect my stops on my feet! I hope that my hitch-hiking won’t worry you. It’s a very safe way much safer than in the states. We have met so many interesting people. I really believe this is the way to get around

Europe. January 3rd, 1962. Back again in Vienna. We hadn’t planned to return so early, but lucky old me caught a cold in Krimml the last couple of days. I could barely talk on New Year’s Day. I was supposed to visit Janet in Zurick, Switzerland, but Paddy and our chaperone at Krimml thought it best for me to return. You see we had planned to hitchhike there. Several kids left from Krimml for Switzerland, (all hitch-hiked) since Krimml isn’t far from the border. It is against the lES regulations to hitch-hike but everyone does it. Really it saves a lot of money and we met so many nice and interesting people. They really boosted our German knowledge. After we would ride with the people for a few hours, we would be so exhausted because we had to speak German and try to understand them. It was all well worth it though. I don’t think I told you about the people we rode with on our way back to Krimmel. The man who took is from Berlin to the West German border was the chief architect in the German Foreign Office. He originally came from East Berlin several years ago. He was our most interesting and enlightening driver. We were able to speak English with him—his English was perfect. When he let us off, he bought us dinner and gave us his address in case we had a chance to return to Berlin. Not only him, but all the Berliners and Germans were so friendly. Several people bought us coffee and

meals. Hitch-hiking is the life! I’m convinced and I hope you are, too. We didn’t get to Krimml until Christmas day. We made it to Munich on Christmas Eve and decided traffic wouldn’t be much on Christmas. We hopped a train the next morning. At first we were a bit depressed that we hadn’t made it to the ski lodge for Christmas Eve for they had a big party. But we attended a midnight mass in a beautiful, modern Catholic Church. It was solidly packed. It was a beautiful service and it lifted our spirits. However we were tired the next morning when we had to catch an 8:00 a.m. train. That train was filled, too. Everyone was going skiing. All ages,— we saw two women who must have been in their seventies with ski pants and ski shoes on. It’s everyones sport here. The conductor came by after two hours and asked for our tickets. He told us after looking at our tickets we were supposed to have gotten off and transferred to another train at the last stop. We were really mad since no one had told us. We had to get off at the next station and wait another hour for a train. That had messed us up and we

rode and transferred on trains all morning and afternoon. What fun on Christmas day! Somehow we made it to Krimml in time for supper. You are probably wondering how we ever get anywhere. It’s amazing that we got to Berlin on our own. The train rides did take us through beautiful countryside mainly the Austrian Alps. Krimml may not be very big (it has one hotel, several small pensions, one drugstore, and no doctors) but it was beautiful. Our hotel was down in a valley and the mountains completely surrounded us. One slight disappointment there wasn’t too much snow—enough for beginners. For good skiing many had to climb a mountain. Believe it or not I climbed straight up a mountain for three hours. Another girl and an Austrian boy were along. The boy (Richard) carried all three pair of skis! Caroline and I could barely carry ourselves. Snow was on the. ground all the way up but we had to shed our coats because we were actually sweating from climbing. Poor Richard those skis were heavy but he was strong as an ox and climbed faster than we two. I would have never made it up if I had to carry my skis. When we got to the top, I was so tired but determined to ski. There were several slopes to ski on. Richard was a terrific skier and he gave us a lot of pointers. It is an exciting sport but I haven’t perfected it yet—far from it. I gave a lot of people a good laugh when I fell and skied on my posterior! Thank goodness for soft snow! At least I came through without breaking a leg which is more than two of our girls did. They are now wearing walking casts. It would be fairly easy to break a leg while skiing especially when you get going fast or go over an unexpected hump in the ground. I enjoyed it and wish that I had more time to do some. I thought it would be bitter cold skiing but it is strenuous and you really work up a sweat. On New Year’s Eve, Caroline and I had dates with a couple of Austrians. We went to a nearby town to a dance. It was a lot of fun, everyone was doing the polka. The place was all decorated, it was quite an evening. We had a slight language problem—they spoke no English and we couldn’t always understand them and their dialect. I did meet a lot of other people in the local case. The Austrians and that is excluding the Viennese are fun to be with. I really enjoyed myself and am ready to again.
My Christmas package has not arrived as of now. With all the bureacracy in this Austrian post office system it may take forever before it gets here. Hope you all had a nice time in the sunny south land.
