Endowment stated, “It goes without saying that this action of the Board is a tribute to Dr. Clowes and the esteem in which he was held by his associates at Eli Lilly and Company.” Commenting on the board’s action, Mrs. Clowes said, “We are grateful for this splendid gift and the way it will implement academic life on the Butler campus.” The building of the auditorium was initiated by Mrs. Clowes and her two sons, Dr. G. H. A. Clowes, Jr., of Cleveland, Ohio, and Allen W. Clowes of Indianapolis who is a trustee of Butler University. Cost of the completed construction, approximately $3,500(000, includes a complete auditorium with seating, flooring and all essential elements; but does not include extras such as parking, landscaping, organ, audio-visual facilities and similar items. Clowes Memorial Hall has been designed as a multi-purpose hall for music, opera, ballet and dramatic performances, as well as lectures, choral singing, cinema, university convocations and exercises, and for cultural and civic purposes. It will seat 2,200 persons, 1,300 on the main floor and 900 in three balcony-box levels. The stage house is 90 feet in height which will allow for the complete staging of grand'opera. Architects are John M. Johansen of New Canaan, Conn., and Evans Woolen 111 of Indianapolis. George Bahre Company of Indianapolis is the general contractor. Many of the same special consultants used by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York also have been employed on the local project.
