In 10 months students borrowed $809,965. The average loan is $527. | USA Funds is a nonprofit corporation that endorses bank loans which students use to pay college expenses. For each SI,OOO raised and maintained by USA Funds in an endorsement reserve, hometown banks may lend needy students up to a total of $12,500. Each SI,OOO contribution to the reserves permits USA Funds to endorse loans for 25 students at SSOO each. These loans in Indiana are available to any resident of the state who has completed the first year of college and may be used for expenses at any approved college in the United States. Three-fourths of the loans endorsed by USA Funds are for students whose families have earnings below $7,000 per year. Many of the loans are made to students with one or more brothers or sisters in college. One-fourth of the loans were made to students with parents earning less than $4,000 per year. Most loans are to students whose parents have more than 4 dependents other than the borrowing student. s USA Funds in Indiana is now raising additional funds so that no student who is a resident of Indiana will be denied funds for eollegd expenses. The chairman of the Indiana program is Mr. E. B. Newill, retired vice-president of General Motors. Former Governor Harold Handley is assisting in raising funds for the endorsement reserve.

Indiana Bell "Metroplan" Outdoor phases of Indiana Bell’s “Metroplan” preparations stand out among four major telephone construction projects now being carried out by the company in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. George K. Kennelly, Indianapolis division manager, said the company, over-all, will invest more than $600,000 and will place nearly 31,000 miles of new telephone wire in the four jobs. The largest of the projects involves expansion of telephone facilities for upgrading—as part of “Metroplan”—of rural service to modern, one- and two-party service. Extension of city telephone service to all outlying sectors of the Indianapolis exchange area, without mileage charges, is one of the highlights of the big service improvement program to be completed next fall. Additional underground and aerial cable is being placed at [many points in the STate telei phone area in the current project. At the same time, Kennelly said, outside facilities are being “beefed up” on the side to help create more STate telephone numbers. Another of the projects is under way in the Greenwood area. There both underground and overhead telephone cable is being added in rural portions of the TUcker exchange to help facilitate the introduction of suburban service under “Metroplan.” Suburban service reduces to four the maximum number of l parties on any telephone line and substitutes an economical zone rate plan for the mileage system now in effect,

A "Packaged Deal" In Potatoes No matter what you call a white potato be it spud, cobbler or Irish potato—consider it a bargain food buy. If you are looking for economy, nourishment or convenience—you have a package deal when you buy the white potato. Even though we eat fewer potatoes than we did a decade Of so ago, we ate more potatoes last year than all other fresh vegetables combined. The per capita consumption of potatoes was about 95 pounds, or nearly a potato a day for every man, woman and child. Plentiful is the word for potatoes too, with the supplies of potatoes 10% larger than last year. Potatoes are too good a buy to pass up. Quantity lots are cheaper if your storage facilities are adequate; you should keep potatoes in a cool, dark place. For best keeping, store potatoes' at temperatures of 45 to 50 degrees F. Darkness prevents greening of the skin and flesh. This greening lowers eating quality. Potatoes also need air circulation. Don’t store in an air tight container or place them on a damp cellar floor.
