Monument Circle Christmas Dedication The public is cordially invited to witness and participate in the impressive and inspirational opening ceremonies, on the south steps of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, December 3, when the annual observance of “CHRISTMAS TIME ON MONUMENT CIRCLE” will be inaugurated for the 1961 season. This will be the second year that the dedication ceremony is being held on a Sunday evening, in keeping with the religious significance of this proud tradition, which has been observed in Indianapolis each year since 1945. It is all made possible by the wholehearted cooperation, hard work and generous contributions of hundreds of civic-minded firms, organizations and individual citizens. Already an impressive number of choral groups, from various schools, churches, and musical organizations, have been scheduled to appear at various times throughout the Christmas Season. Dedicated workmen and designers have been transforming the Monument into a fitting setting for this year’s theme “CHRISTMAS DOWN THROUGH THE AGES.” The lights will be turned on at the dedicatory services Sunday evening.
GIFTS-A-THON A Gift Lift Gift-a-thon, featuring local and national television celebrities and mental health leaders, will be conducted Tuesday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. until noon over television station WTTV for the purpose of collecting Christmas gifts for mental patients who are hospitalized in Marion County. Sponsored by the Marion County Association for Mental Health, the Gift-a-thon will be emceed by Bob Carter, host of the daily three-hour coffee program which is a regular feature of Channel 4. Telephones to the studios will be manned by celebrity volunteers who will talk to gift donors who phone their gift pledges to the station during the telecast. The station will also serve as a collection depot during the hours of the show. Gift Life is the annual project sponsored by the Marion County Association for Mental Health to collect, wrap and distribute 10,000 Christmas gifts for mental patients who are often forgotten by families and friends during the Christmas season. Collection depots for this year’s drive are located at Indianapolis Power & Light on Monument Circle, Block’s, Ayres, and Wasson’s neighborhood shopping center stores, and Indianapolis fire stations. Wrapping Headquarters opens this year on Dec. 1, at 422 N. Capitol, in facilities, which have been made available by Volunteers of America. First day of wrapping will feature an Open House celebration for donors, party givers, Mental Health Board Members, and wrappers. Gifts will be distributed to mental patients at Central State, LaRue Carter Memorial, and Marion County General Hospitals at parties to be held on Dec. 17 and on Christmas Day. WESTWOOD NEW YEAR'S DANCE SUNDAY. DECEMBER 31
Cooking Wild Gome Is Easy The best way to cook small game animals is according to their age. Age may be difficult to judge, but you can figure 80 percent of the small game taken in season is less than 1 year old. This game is tender and may be cooked by oven-roasting, broiler, or pan-broiling methods. Because small animals are always skinned, the meat may easily become dry and tough. To avoid this, cover with an oil or fat-soaked cheesecloth during roasting. As this dries, baste with more oil or fat. Bacon fat is especially good because it masks the game flavor. _ It takes about an hour to braise, roast or pot-roast squirrels and rabbits. Rabbits, however, can

also be broiled. This takes only 30 to 40 minutes. For every % to % pounds of ready-to-cook squirrel or rabbit, you will get 1 to 2 servings. The rules for cooking wild ducks and geese are much the same as for small animals. Figure 1 M pounds dressed weight to serve 2 to 3 persons. Most people prefer to oven-roast ducks and geese. Without dressing, this will take about 45 minutes at 300 degrees F.; with dressing, 1% to 1% hours. Apple chunks may be used as a stuffing. The apples will absorb some of the game flavor. They should be discarded after roasting is completed. To add special zest to waterfowl, use spices and herbs—but with discreation. Try basil, oregano, marjoram, sage, thyme, savory or rosemary.
