SUE TODD REPORTS TO HER PARENTS, MR. & MRS. JOE TODD - Dear Family: I received your “newsy” letter this afternoon. It really doesn’t take mail from the states long to get here. How many days does it take for my letters to get home? But my Hanover yearbook has not arrived yet. I keep thinking that it will come each day, but it never does. Did you send it to this address or to Neuer Markt I? I check each day at Neuer Markt, too. Neuer Markt is the office building for the lES staff members. Many of the kids have their mail sent there because we are downtown most of the day anyway. We can study at our library which is right across from the office. We can also study at the American House. It is a library, reading room, music room combined. We can read American papers (mostly New York) and magazines there. It is a brand new building and it is really nice to have books and magazines available in English. As much as I am in contact with German my progress is still very slow. The people here speak their Viennese dialect. Sometimes it is a bit difficult to understand them but they can understand me when I speak straight German. Of course, I speak it very slowly and poorly. After a year I should have it down pat. In our German class we read German newspapers and converse in German. So they are really pushing for us to learn the language. November 1 and 2 are legal Austrian holidays. This means no school. Of course, these days fall on Wednesday and Thursday, and officially we have school on Friday. But unofficially everyone is cutting Friday classes; therefore, we have a five day holiday. Everyone is traveling somewhere. Paddy and I along with many of the lES group are heading for Germany. We have transit visas (Continued on Page 3)

The Lions Club at Speedway is taking an active part in the Diabetes Detection Drive this week, it has been announced by Raymond Dault, president. Mrs. Violet Chaliff is chairman of activities in connection with the program in the Speedway area. Free test kits are now available at the Standard Supermarket in the Speedway Shopping Center and also at drug stores throughout the city. All individuals are urged to obtain these kits and use them during this week. Dr. Walter Chroniak, general chairman of the Diabetes Detection Week says there are an estimated 3,800 “unknown” diabetics in Marion County alone. The purpose of the drive is to locate these, so that they may be given the proper medical attention and dietary control to lead normal useful lives. “Diabetes is usually very easily controlled, and those who have the disease often outlive average people because they practice better health regimen,” said Dr. Chroniak. “Only when neglected, does diabetes become serious, “even fatal.”
“About 1 out of every 140 people in this country have diabetes today.” Half of those are receiving proper guidance and control, but there are many who do not realize their condition. These are our targets for this drive. “In addition to the Speedway distribution points, a downtown Diabetes Information Center is open at the northwest corner of Pennsylvania and Washington Streets. The hours are 9:00 to 8:00 Thursday, 9:00 to 5:00 Friday and 12:00 to 4:00 Saturday. A physician and a dietician will be in attendance for several hours each day and informative movies will be shown there. If unable to visit one of these locations, ME 9-2511 is the number to call for your Test Kit or other information on Diabetes. Volunteer operators will be on duty from 9 to 4 daily (Saturday 12 to 4) through next Tuesday, November 21, although Diabetes Week ends this Saturday. This is Diabetes Detection Week —the time to find out if you are among the estimated 3,800 “unknown” diabetics in Marion County. Obtain Free Test Kit for each member of your family. The Indianapolis Diabetes Association, an agency of the United Fund, urges all who obtain these kits to mail them in without fail. The kit is of no value unless sent in for analysis. All reports are kept in strict confidence.

SCHOOL REORGANIZATION MEETING The State School Reorganization Committee will hold a hearing tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. in the World War Memorial Auditorium on the report of the Marion County School Reorganization Committee. The report as it now stands retains the 11 independent school districts in Marion County rather than throwing them together in a county unit. Since this would permit Speedway to have its own school system, Speedway school officials will support the proposed plan. According to reports in the press there may be some opposition to the proposed plan and there may be renewed efforts to promote a county unit plan. Any Speedway school patron who wishes to attend this meeting should do so. After the hearing tonight, the state committee will either accept or reject the plan as presented.
