Dr. and Mrs. Wesley Kissel A Misconception About Pork Now more than ever before we’re all weight conscious. Being overweight is a detriment to health as well as appearance. Therefore, the caloric value of foods is important to many of us. And in conversation with different people . . . both men and women ... I find that there’s some confusion about one food in particular. That is pork. Actually pork that is lean and trimmed of excess fat . . . which is the way we buy pork today . . . is not higher in calories than many other meats. A 3% ounce

serving of cooked pork has a calorie count of 240. This can be compared with the same sized serving of cooked beef which is 266 . . . and of cooked lamb which is 258. Cured ham is even lower than fresh pork with a count of 219 for a 3% ounce serving. Perhaps this will help to clear some of the confusion about the caloric value of pork. You can assure your family and friends that pork can be included on weight reduction diets. In fact, you can stress the importance of including pork in anyone’s diet because pork is particularly rich in high quality proteins and in thiamine. Sweetpotato Flakes Packaged sweetpoato flakes are one of the most promising products for the sweetpotato crop as a result of two years’ study of market possibilities and processing methods. The flakes, first developed by the USDA are made by peeling, slicing and cooking the potatoes, then pulping and rolling them out in dry sheets on a sun drier. When dried, they are broken into flakes and packaged in cans or moisture-resistant bags.

NO TIM E TO COMPLAIN The TB patient who leaves the hospital against medical advise is one of the great problems in TB eradication today. The sick person gets sicker and meanwhile spreads his germs to other people. But it isn’t easy to stay put in the TV hospital. Compared to the length of hospital stay for other illnesses, the time in the hospital for the TB patient is a long one—often months. In spite of everything the hospital can provide to help the time pass, the minutes

The least complaint or tone of anxiety from his family will be mulled over and exaggerated out of* all proportion. Lack of any news may have the same effect. Something is wrong. The family isn’t getting along without me. The bills aren’t being paid. The children aren’t getting proper care. I’d better get out of here and go home to take care of things. It is vital for all members of the family of a tuberculosis patient to understand their importance to his cure. Community agencies can help them through their financial and other domestic difficulties. The family can keep the patient up to date on family news that will not depress him and include him in family discussions on matters which will

Eating Right Makes Difference Most of us are getting enough to eat in this country but still a lot of us are undernourished. How come? Well, we just aren’t eating enough of the right kinds of foods. It’s not hard to eat the right foods. Or rather it’s not hard to know what the right foods are. The U. S. Department of Agricul-

PUBLIC NOTICE Only 57 Meadowood lots in the City of Speedway remain for sale by the Falender Building Corporation. When the remaining lots in Speedway are sold, Meadowood will extend into Indianapolis. Fredrick Falender has designed and built Meadowood homes for over 600 families in Speedway. Many have used the Falender trade-in program which insures that the second time home buyer will not have to move twice to get situated, and relieves worries about the possibility of owning two homes at the same time. Meadowood families are close to the finest public and parochial schools. A Speedway grade school and park are located in Meadowood and the new Speedway High School, nearby, will be ready late next year. Shopping and recreation facilities are close at hand. The new Speedway Shopping Center is located adjacent to the Community. All Falender homes are conventionally built with flexibility for custom modification and with brick and aluminum exteriors. The large selection of Falender designs range from 1400 to 2200 square feet of living area. Prices range from $16,900 to $25,000, including choice of available lots. Kitchens in Falender homes include birch cabinets with formica top, waste disposal and range hood with exhaust system. Maintenance free aluminum windows are used with formica sills. All Meadowood lots are on paved streets with sidewalks. Sanitary and storm sewers and all Speedway city utilities are available.

ture has broken down all the foods into just four groups. By knowing what the groups are and making sure you include servings from all four groups in your daily menu, you can be sure that you and your family are eating right. The milk group consists of all dairy products. That shouldn’t be hard to remember. Adults need to or more cups of milk per day or their equivalent. Youngsters need more. You can substitute ice cream or cheese for the fluid milk. The meat group is made up of all meats—beef, pork and the other red meats, fish and poultry, and as alternates you have dry beans, dry peas, nuts, peanut butter and, very important, eggs. Just two servings a day from this group will do the trick. The fruit and vegetable group has in it all the fruits and vegetables. You need four or more

servings per day from this group. One of these should be a citrus fruit or another good source of vitamin C, tomatoes for instance. You should also have a serving of a deep green or a deep yellow vegetable at least every other day for vitamin A. The bread and cereal group, you guessed it, includes bread and cerals. Try to get four or more servings per day from this group. One slice of bread or one ounce of cereal makes up one serving, so filling this requirement should be no problem. That’s all there is to it. Four groups, milk, meat, bread and cereal, and fruits and vegetables. Include all of these in your daily meal plans, in the right amounts, and you will find you and your family feel better, look better, and don’t spend so much time fighting those nagging little ills that can make life miserable.

Penal Institutions Assist In March Of Dimes Drive This is the story of a few people who were once a burden to Society that are now working to assist our communities in worth while effort. A short time ago, the Director of the March of Dimes Campaign approached Mr. Arthur Campbell, Chairman of the Department of Correction, asking for help in the arduous task of addressing and stuffing 180,000 envelopes. The Department of Correction willingly accepted the challenge and under the direction of Mr. Glen Doughitt, the envelopes were distributed to the Indiana Reformatory, The Boys School and The Girls School. All three Institutions have worked diligently to accomplish this tremendous task. As an example, at the Indiana Reformatory, twentytwo inmates under the direction of Educational Director Herschel B. Thomas, completed 50,000 envelopes within the period of one week by working around the clock. This is an example of the interest these inmates have in the Society they are paying their debt to. Mrs. Phoebe Fickert, Executive Director of the National Foundation and Mr. William Fortune, Chairman of the March of Dimes Campaign, wish to express their sincere appreciation to the State Officials, Staff people and inmates who have helped others, through their efforts to find a new meaning to life. Shorter periods of daylight, which come with fall and winter months, bring added hazards to both pedestrians and motorists, says the Indiana Traffic Safety Foundation. Reduced visibility is considered a major factor in the increased number of pedestrian accidents generally recorded during this period of the year. Now is the time to make a concerted effort in your community to emphasize the need for full compliance with traffic regulations pertaining to both those who drive and those who walk.

Hamburgers Have Become Rig Business Capable of producing up to 60S broiled hamburgers evesy hour.. the local Burger Chef drive-in. typical of those across the nation, is a new business force in the community which is contributing substantially to daily purchases of foods and supplies. Open each day from 11 san. to 11 pan., the Burger Chef operation when at full capacity can turn out well over two and a half million hamburgers a year. Thousands of dozens of buns and tons of lean, select quality beef plus many gallons of catsup and mustard are purchased from local feed suppliers to swell the total area sales. A steady flow of milk shakes and other beverages calls for daily deliveries from local dairies and soft drink suppliers. The average store uses 10,000 gallons of milk per year for milk shakes. In addition to the-purchase of supplies, the Burger Chef drive-in also contributes to area payrolls through employment of local individuals who operate the automated hamburger and milk shake equipment. Part of a national organization. Burger Chef stores are all locally owned or managed by individuals who have entered the growing drivein food field from a wide variety of previous occupations. Each Burger Chef, therefore, is entirely a local business, permanentty established to grow with the community. The Indiana Traffic Safety Foundation urges all motorists to be on the lookout for the pedestrian who does not look out for himself. Don’t be in such a hurry to walk your last step, says the Indiana Traffic Safety Foundation. Wait until it’s safe to cross the street. Be alert when crossing the street. Don’t lose your life by a couple of feet, says the Indiana Traffic Safety Foundation. Don’t walk yourself to death, says the Indiana Traffic Safety Foundation. Stop and look both ways before crossing the street. Combine headwork with footwork when crossing a street, says the Indiana Traffic Safety Foundation.
